Check the PA DOC website for visitor information. http://www.cor.state.pa.us/

Somerset is in the middle of no-where PA--and is known for being pretty racist--mostly black city prisoners and mostly small-town white CO's.

Question Questions about Somerset?

Hey, Ladies!!!!!!
I posted this in coming home, but I don't think that I will get too many answers regarding Somerset State institution there.
I have a ton of questions, sorry!!! I am just so nervous and need to make sure everything is planned and ready to go in 40DAY!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard that we are allowed to send our men some clothes to come home in. Is that true? If so where do they hold the clothes? When is it okay to send it?
If I choose to wait until the day of his release do they allow them to change their clothes? My love will be released from Somerset and they have visitor bathrooms, will they allow him to change in one of the bathrooms when he come out?
Another question he wanted me to buy him a suit I need to make sure it fits, could I send one for him to try on and they send it back to me if it is too small/big? (oh, by the way we are getting married on the day of his release, that is why I need the suit). Could someone measure him or something there? Any suggestions ladies????

THANX LADIES!!!!!!!

Yes you can send them clothes to come home in. I chose not to send them, but to bring them there the day he got out. That way I knew he would get them. I don't know if they have a different procedure at Somerset (my man was in Albion) but I gave the clothes to the CO when I signed in and they brought them back to him to change into before he came out. I brought boxers, jeans, a t-shirt, socks, shoes and a belt. As for the suit, I highly doubt that they'll send it back to you if it doesn't fit...that would be nice but they never make things easier on us!! Try and see if he can somehow get his measurements taken and sent to you. Then just do the best you can!! Congrats on the wedding...that's so cool that you're doing it the day of his release. I wish you the best of luck and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me!!!

Rona:
Yes, the last month flew by. Very quickly. Then it seemed the last week went kind of slow and kinda felt unreal. The night before was rough!! The morning of his release was even worse...I was sick to my stomach, couldn't breathe, had a splitting headache...but all in a wonderful kind of way if that makes sense. Enjoy the way you're feeling because looking back now...even though it seemed like torture at the time, it was all part of what I was going through and you need to go through it to get ahead. It makes the reunion even more wonderful. By the way...you guys are a really cute couple

tonysgirl... You cannot send any clothes to the institution in Somerset for him to change in. You cannot send a suit for him to try on... all you can do, is bring the clothes with you for him to change in the restroom once he is released, and hope they fit. Somerset policies on release is, the day he is released, you wait in the waiting room there at the main entrance, and when he comes out, you can give him the clothes to change in. Even though he is being released, their mail policies do not change. He is only allowed letters, books from the editor, and of course money in the form of a M.O.- nothing else. As for getting him "sized" I do know they dont have any one there to take an inmates exact measurments, but maybe another inmate could, although I dont know where they would get a measuring tape, I am not even sure if they have them there being Somerset it not a place where you can have any clothing sent in... hope this helps.

missellie,
I go to Somerset about every week when the weather is good, have for a few years now so I know pretty much how things work there. Is there anything specific you would like to know? Somerset SCI is a nice facility, very clean and visiting is comfortable. The inmates are not allowed into the vending area, but the machines are reasonably priced, and they usually have a good selection. Inmate activities are also a plus, they do have varsity teams inmates can play on.. They have baseball, soccer, basketball.... They offer several college courses via Westmoreland County Community College that inmates can take if they have a high school diploma or a GED. The cost is $50.00 a class, with no more than 2 classes allowed to be taken in one semester. There is an inmate organization called S.O.A.R. that sponsors activities throughout the summer for inmates at the prison. I am not sure exactly what you want to know, but there is some of the more "into it" things Somerset has for inmates.

Hi Grannynut here (Louisiana Gal) my son is at Laurel-Highlands in Somerset also. Can anyone give me some info on the place. My son has been there about a month now and is waiting to go to Boot Camp. Says it is real nice and the people are very nice very low risk but mostly older inamates. No bars, alot of prespect, sounds good but this is the fourth facility he has been in and each time it is further away from his family. thanks

Hi Grannynut.... Sorry, i replied to your e-mail before i read the boards here.. now I know where you are talking about. laurel highlands is a min. security facility, and it is just down the road from SCI Somerset. It houses mainly geriatric inmates, but they have alot of younger inmates there as well to help run the place... I hear it is a pretty nice place, and everyone I have talked to that has been there says it is comfortable to visit.... Maybe someone will be along that has actually been there to visit and will be able to give you more info, as all i can relate is "hear say"... Take care!

I am new to this... my fiance is doing life without parole at SCI Somerset but is going through appeals. What type of visiting do they allow? Is it scary in there? I worry about him all the time. I guess I am just looking for any info I can get. Thanks!

I think Somerset isn't too bad of a place. My fiance is there, has been for almost four years and my dad is there also. My dad has been there numerous time and he says its one of the better prisons. I've heard this quite a bit. I go there every week to visist my fiance. The visiting room is a big cafeteria type room. There's a play room there for the children and vending machines. You can stay from 8:30 until around 3. Visiting is everyday except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Most of the guards we deal with are all pleasant and friendly. It's not a scary place at all. It reminds me of a university almost. I'm very comfortable there. I can understand that you'd worry but for the most part I don't think there's much to worry about. Hope things work out for you.

frmbeliever,
There is a special form that has to get filled out for children to go visit. This would apply even if the child's mother was also going. When the inmate requests to have the child added to his visiting list, the prison will send a form to the child's mother, to get her permission for the child to visit. After that gets approved, the child can visit with the mother, someone else approved by her (you), or "county CYS representatives" (I guess if the child was in foster care or something).

It does not get too crowded, at least it hasnt been when I was there because of the extended Christmas visiting hours... But I usually go on Christmas Eve or christmas day and I have never had my visit terminated due to overcrowding...
