The Robinson Correctional Institution was opened on November 8, 1985 named after Carl Robinson, the former Warden at the Somers Correctional Institution. It is situated on 1,700 acres, which is the site of an historic Shaker Farm Community.
In January of 1990, with the implementation of a new Inmate Objective Classification System, the institution's security level was changed to medium-security.
In 1996, Building 7 was turned over to the Judicial Department for use as a juvenile facility.
In 1997, jurisdiction of Building 7 is returned to the facility and re-opened as a housing unit for 71 outside clearance inmates.
