Default Have 70% of us committed prison offenses?

A law professor thinks so.

http://www.politifact.com/punditfact...ould-put-us-j/

Another disagrees:
Quote:
David Gray, professor of law, University of Maryland School of Law
"70 percent seems low to me. Once you factor in illegal drug use, crimes of recklessness (which seldom are detected because no harm accrues), downloading, DUI, failures to report income, and the scores of relatively innocuous offenses that just happen to carry the possibility of jail time in some jurisdictions, I’d be surprised if the percentage wasn’t much higher than 70 percent over the course of most adults’ lifetimes."

This is a really important point because it speaks to the difference (or really lack of it) between many people in jail and many people who've never been. And this calculus doesn't include very harmful things that people do that aren't considered criminal....

Obviously I can't speak on the stats, but I would have a hard time taking most anyone serious who said they'd never broken a law in their life. I have-- willfully and unknowingly. I am in the class of lucky folks who never had that go poorly for them.

I'm in the same situation - if I'd been caught at any of many things, I'd have a felony record, but I'e been fortunate not to have that happen.

If they would have limited it to 'crimes' and NOT attempted to quantify as 'felony,' then there might be a point. But much of that list is conduct that is often a misdemeanor.

By example, under Texas law, anything under four ounces of pot is a misdemeanor. The first two DWI offenses will be misdemeanors in most circumstances. Cannot speak to how the State would have handled downloaded music since I never saw a prosecution for that...and MOST people are not out there downloading kiddie porn (which IS a felony).

There is also the school of thought that says a person has NOT committed an offense until an allegation is brought and they have not engaged in felonious conduct unless so convicted...

Look, I didn’t download the music, I just walked away from the computer and when I came back it was all magically there.

I think that the majority of people have done SOMETHING in their life that a prosecutor worth their title could get charged as a felony.

Me personally? LOL yeah, had a few felonies dropped to misdemeanors and countless more I was never caught for.

I recommend 2 books for anyone who still believes "the land of the free" propaganda.

Three Felonies a Day by Harvey Silverglate (which says that there are so many criminal laws on the books that everyone regularly violates them, many times unknowingly) and Licensed to Lie, "exposing corruption in the Department of Justice" by Sidney Powell which highlights the rampant prosecutorial misconduct that is business as usual for many US prosecutors.

I recently read where there are more than 100 million Americans who have been convicted of felony crimes. It wasn't that long ago, less than 100 years, where the Census found that there were fewer than 100 million total Americans.

See also "One Nation Under Arrest". It's by the Heritage Foundation so it's a good one to show your conservative friends. Some of the cases there are not as clear-cut as the book claims though.
