Ex-Rikers guard gets 30 years in prison in inmate’s death

NEW YORK — "A former guard at New York’s Rikers Island jail was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday for violating the civil rights of a restrained ailing inmate when he kicked him to death outside a jail doctor’s office.

Brian Coll, 47, of Smithtown, was convicted in the December 2012 death of 52-year-old Ronald Spear. He was pinned by other guards while Coll kicked him, causing brain bleeding, evidence showed. Coll also was convicted of obstruction of justice, falsifying records and conspiring to cover up the beating.

Good - I hope they send him to Riker's to do his 30 years. Disgusting.

Kicking a restrained sick man to death is appalling I am glad he has been bought to justice.

Convicting this one man misses the point, which is the regular and systemic abuse that occurs in jails and prisons all over the world. Just as we haven't solved the drug problem by arresting dealers, we won't solve the problem of abuse in jails by an arrest here and there. This is a fundamental problem with criminal justice altogether - we turn systemic problems into individual cases. Yes, individuals should be accountable for their actions, but we should not feel that his case will make much if any difference to how prisoners are treated - at Rikers or anywhere else.

How disgusting to kick someone to death...even more so in a position of power kicking someone restrained to death.

My condolences to the friends and family of the deceased. And though I'm sorry that the family of this ex-co will now have to go through a prison sentence, I'm glad to see that in this case some justice was met.

Serves him right. Put him in general pop.
