How wonderful! I am an advocate for GA & there is such a need for more people to speak out & make change. Who is better to work for change than those of us who have a loved on in the system? I did find an advocacy group that you might want to contact. Here's the link to the Nevada CURE group. http://www.nevadacure.org/

Good luck & keep us posted. I hope you can share the stories about McCLure so that action can be taken.

The hardest part about prison activism is getting people to care. People who do not have a LO in the system are generally not concerned with how bad the food is or how uncomfortable the beds are. I can't count the number of times I have heard "Well they should have thought of that before they committed a crime!" And there is some truth to that so we have to pick our battles wisely, otherwise we come across as having unreasonable expectations for what prison should be like. The issues that are most likely to be successful are when the conditions violate the law, which happens all the time. The ACLU and PLO are excellent resources in advocating for prisoner's rights so you could consider volunteering with them. Before speaking to anyone on behalf of prisoners, you should do some research and learn from experienced advocates what works and what has the potential to backfire. Good luck!

Act locally. What's happening at your county jail, for example?

See what the Quakers are doing in your area and offer to help. They've been concerned with prison conditions for centuries.

Study how to talk to legislators and how to give testimony in legislative hearings.

Fight for independent oversight of the prison system. That beats trying to stomp on problems one at a time.

One of the strongest arguments about/against jail is that it is very expensive and not very effective. So rather than talking about treating prisoners better, which often doesn't generate much support, we can talk about better use of tax dollars to achieve more public safety through using alternatives to incarceration. This message is already out there among many who are not at all concerned about prisoners, such as taxpayer groups.
