Pre-paid debit card is the answer.

Because this is a phone issue, not a legal problem, I have moved it here to the Phones, Mail, and Visitation forum.

A prepaid visa is probably your answer, though some of the phone carriers have arrangements with Western Union.

With Securus you can send payment by mail but it might have to be a money order.

Just look at the companies website under payment options.

You may want to ask this question on the state specific forums.
Not all prisons/jails are the same.
When my fiancé was in Florida county jail- I had to put money on an account with one company. He could call as long as there was money on the account. (You could use a prepaid debit for this)

When he was moved to Florida DOC/prison- I had to set up an account and put money on it with a different phone provider- securus. You could also use a prepaid debit card for this. HOWEVER he could not call me until I sent in a copy of my phone bill to the prison.(landline because my cell phone is not a contract phone) The whole process took about six weeks.

I am not sure where your man is but the rules may be different so ask in the state forum and you should be able to find out exactly what you need to do.
Also- check the jail/prison website regarding phone policy.

The prepaid debit card just works like a credit card. You put money on it and you make a payment through the phone carrier.

The brand of card does not matter at all.
The facility couldn't care less how you pay their contracted phone carrier.
The phone carrier will have a list of acceptable payment methods on their website.

Go to Walmart and buy a prepaid vanilla visa card, they have them in $25, $50, and $100 amounts. They are at the checkout. I believe it's around a $4 charge to buy the card.

In Santa Clara County?
If so, here is information on calls:
http://www.sccgov.org/sites/doc/Inma...r-Inmates.aspx
If that is where he is you need to read that FIRST.

You need to follow whatever protocol the facility he is at has in place.

It will work. Any prepaid card with a visa or mastercard logo will work.

I use pre paid debit card is what I use. Works like regular visa or MasterCard. Best one to have is a rushcard. U can apply for one at rushcarddotcom. You'll get it in about 7 - 10 business days. If u can't or don't wanna wait that long then u can always go to CVs, WalMart or anywhere that sells prepaid debit cards. I would suggest the vanilla visa prepaid card if u don't get a rushcard
