Default Bones recovered from Dozier (abandoned state reform school) "boot hill"

Bones recovered from Dozier "boot hill"

MARIANNA -- Forensic sleuths began digging up bones Saturday in a long-forgotten graveyard near an abandoned state reform school known for brutality in the first half of the last century.

"The very small parts we have seen so far, I would characterize them as large-bone fragments," said Christian Wells, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of South Florida. "Obviously, because of the age of the deposits, they are skeletonized, no tissue material."

Wells and Erin Kimmerle, a USF forensic anthropologist, head a team of about two dozen researchers, including fellow faculty members, students and volunteers from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. They will be working through Tuesday in the first dig at a site known as "boot hill," about a mile from the now-padlocked grounds of the Arthur G. Dozier School, which operated from 1900 through mid-2011.

The only reason I know about this place is because of a post on PTO from probably a couple of year ago. Someone was looking for family members of anyone who was housed at this "school". It's sad to read about what took place there.
