Default Union Upset By the DOC

I picked this up from today's Chester Sun Times. Seems the new acting warden has been doing something naughty!!! I just hope it doesn't escalate into something bigger.

Chester Sun Times - 24th May 2004

Unfair labor practice charge filed by AFSCME against DOC

AFSCME has filed an unfair labor practice charge with the Illinois Labor Relations Board late last week after an information picket was held last Monday in Chester.

Buddy Maupin, Southern Region director of AFSCME, filed the complaint alleging illegal videotaping of union workers during an informational picket at the Menard Correctional Center. AFSCME also alleges the acting warden of Menard ordered the videotaping to be done.

State employees held the information picket to show their dissatisfaction with ongoing contract negotiations between the state and AFSCME.

A spokesman for the Illinois Department of Corrections said he couldn’t comment on the charge until the department has been served notice.

AFSCME is seeking the original videotape as well as any copies made of it. Also, the union wants a notice posted at Menard that states the agency understands the alleged action was against the law and promises not to do it again.

The current contract between AFSCME, which represents some 37,000 state employees, and the State of Illinois expires on June 30.
