Could someone in Oregon Dept of Corrections PLEASE do something about the guards attitude. I have noticed on several of my visits that the male guards are very rude and disrespectful to the inmates. Not all of the inmates are disrespectful and when asked a question, a little kindness goes a long way and makes it a better day for both. That would spread to others and so on.
There is no reason to be so nasty. It just breads more of the same.
Let's breed kindness and love.

Does anyone have someone currently at OSCI, or has had someone there recently? I'm looking for any information you can share ASAP.

My guy is currently at OSCI. What kind of info are you looking for? He is in the minimum transitional unit for guys who will be getting out in 6 months or less. Visiting isn't too bad there except getting in. If you have to visit on a weekend, you best get there as close to when they allow you to park or you will spend most of the visiting time out in the parking lot. There is a lot of information available and regular reviews for those transitioning out. It is a medium security prison with more inmates on that side than in transition but I don't know much about what goes on there. I do see some of those inmates, like Kip Kinkle, at visits. Ask away and I may be able to find out what you need to know as I visit every weekend.

Here is recent info on OSCI for the DOC website http://www.oregon.gov/DOC/OPS/PRISON/osci.shtml

OSCI offers many work and job preparedness opportunities for inmates including printing, telephone services for the Oregon Health Plan, and the Engineering Support Unit

Oregon State Correctional Institution (OSCI), a medium security facility located three miles east of Salem, was established by action of the 1955 Legislature and became fully operational June 1, 1959. The 880-bed facility provides housing and confinement for males serving sentences for felony convictions from all counties of Oregon. Five hundred of these beds are designated as Transitional Release beds. The prison traditionally houses the departmentīs younger inmates, including those remanded to adult prison from juvenile facilities.

The facility provides useful work and self-improvement programs to enhance inmates ability to reintegrate back into the community. The prison also has a dormitory-style special housing unit for inmates who are medically or physically challenged, but who do not need to be hospitalized or confined in an infirmary.

Recently, OSCI has redirected its focus to address the needs of the large transitional release population. Approximately 500 of the current 880 inmates are within six months of their release back into the community, largely increasing the demand for transition programs.

They have to buy photo "tickets" through the commisary and then when you come to visit you have your photo taken with him. They have a nice nature background that you can stand or sit on a bench in front of it. If he doesn't have any money on his books, that could be a reason that he hasn't written, because he doesn't have enough money to buy an envelope and a stamp. Keep writing to him, he will enjoy getting anything you can send.

Default Osci

My husband and I just recently made our first visit to OSCI last week. Actually, this was our first visit to a prison. All in all, it was a very positive experience. The correctional officers were all very polite and respectful, as we were to them. The grounds around the facility were decorated so nice and festive for Christmas, which was nice to see. There was a cool little playground area, which I assume is for when inmates kids come to visit. The visiting room wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be. What I saw was there were just a lot of people there enjoying spending time together. This is a rough time of year to be away from our son, and even harder for him, I am sure. I am just thankful that the weather permitted our visit and that we found our son in good health and good spirits.

Default Visiting at OSCI

My husband and I just made our third, and hopefully, final visit to OSCI this last weekend. This is the only prison we have visited, but each time we had a positive experience. We found that it is better for us to visit in the mornings as opposed to the afternoon visit. Mornings have a lot less visitors and the whole atmosphere is a little more relaxed. When we went in the afternoon we actually had to spend the first 30 minutes in our car waiting for our number to be called. The C.O's were are very friendly. We even had a visit from Santa when we went the weekend before Christmas! The visiting room is in an older building, but for the most part was clean. There is a nice playroom for dad's to spend time with their kids. When our son was first sentenced we were all so apprehensive and didn't quite know what to expect. What we found is that is isn't all bad, and seeing our son walk through that door and give us all big squeezes is what is all about. Just wanted to share with anybody new who is a little nervous about visiting like we were!

I'm going to visit my boyfriend for the first time since he's been transfered. It will be his first time meeting our 11 week old daughter. We will be going to the Family First Family Field Day. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about visiting with babies? Is there anywhere I can breastfeed? Can I take her in her carseat? What about a diaperbag? Does SHE have a dress code? Also, I was wondering what type of shoes were acceptable for me. Can I wear flipflops? I will be visiting on Aug. 15th so if someone can help me before then that would be great! Thnx a million.
