Default East Coast Federal Prisons?

My boyfriend is currently in federal holding in iowa and just signed a 5 year plea.. He has final sentencing in august and will be transferred somewhere around then. I know we can only put in a request and then its up to the judge or something. But, I really want him transferred somewhere on the east coast, specifically maryland so that I can visit him frequently. But he keeps telling me people on the inside are telling him east coast federal prisons are really rough. He would be minimum security or camp so I cant imagine it being THAT bad. Does anyone have a LO in an east coast prison? Anyone know which ones are bad/good? Thanks

No minimum security federal camp is "really rough" - no matter where it's located.

BOP's website has a map of all the facilities broken down by region. But there is only one in Maryland - Cumberland. I have no idea what it's like there because my family member is at Butner in NC. Keep in mind that BOP will send him wherever there is room unless he's got some serious medical issues (in which case there are only a handful of facilities that can handle medical patients) and it may not be in your home state or even close to home. The judge can make a recommendation but BOP does whatever they want as far as placement.

I spent 18 months at a FPC in Texas and have since talked with others who have been in camps across the country. No camp is rough or violent. In my time, I saw one fight and it was over a football game.

A request for placement can be made at his sentencing. It is up to the judge to make a recommendation or not make one. However, te final decsion rests with the BoP and the judge's recommendation can be accepted or ignored. Placement often depends on available bed space.
