This is just for future reference for anyone else who has a loved one or friend at Wilcox S.P. It seems Wilcox prefers to have all inmate mail and packages sent to a P.O. Box. Here is the full address.

My son was just sent to Wilcox State Prison. He got to call the very first day he was there. I know the visitation hours start at 9.00. Will I have to be there at wilcox exactly 9.00?

Default Wanting to write a family member...

Hi, I just found out that my uncle is in Wilcox. I want to send him a letter but don't know what information I need. I have his GDC ID# and the address for the prison, is that all I need? Any help would be great. Thanks, Nancy

Sweetpeach that should be all you need. The person processing the mail at the prison likes it if you put the dorm number on the letter too but it is not necessary. For what it is worth this is how I would write out the address on the envelope.

Inmates name
GDC# and Dorm #(if you have it)
P.O. Box 397
Abbeville, GA 31001

I have located a Ronnie C Lewis who is 51. You may not have found him on GDOC because he is listed differently. You can PM me with any questions & I'll give you all his info. If its the same guy.

My son is at Wilcox State Prison. The visitation is Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. You have to get there before 11 or after 12:30 because they do count during that time and won't let anyone in. Of course if you are there before 11 you get to stay inside with your loved one during count. You have to be approved for visitation, the inmate sends out the forms and then they let him know who gets approved once you mail them back...this is very important, you don't want to make a wasted trip if your not approved. I even called to double check that i was approved. You can take 20 dollars in quarters for the vending machines, they have to be loose in a sandwich bag. The only other thing you can take in is your state i.d. and car key. You will need to know your car tag number to sign in also. Hope this helps!

That helps a lot!!! Thanks. We are married and I have visited him at each facility where he was housed. Do you think I should still call before coming? Another thing, I don't know if you can answer this, but I am coming from Savannah. He was at Georgia State Prison and I used to get on 280 from I-16 and just take that all the way to Reidsville (a nice straight shot). I see that Wilcox if off of 280....can I just get on 280 like I was doing before but just keep on going? My sense of direction is horrible, I don't want to get too lost. Thanks again for your help.

If you have been visiting and your married then your info is probably in his permanent file. As far as directions, i'm like you, you can go to the website mapquest and type in your address and the prisons address and it will tell you how to get there to a T. Thats what i've had to do. I'm from North Georgia so i'm clueless when it comes to the roads down there, sorry.

Hello Homefree2004,

Welcome to PTO. My husband has been at Wilcox for a few weeks now. For the most part the buildings are dormitories. He is in Dorm 3; he says that most of people mind their own business and that his dorm has prayer circles. He does not like the overcrowding in the dorms. Too many people in one place. He has had some minor problems with small things disappearing: his clippers, toilet tissue. Nothing big, just annoying. Visitation is the most laid back I have ever experienced. The men seem to have a level of freedom I have not seen anywhere else. The lines for visitation were long and the food in the vending machines ran out early. I hope this helps. He seems to be as okay as one can be while in prison, so I count that as a blessing.

Good evening,

I had a wonderful visit with my honey today at Wilcox. The lines were long and only one machine was working (this time the one that wasn't working last time). The visit was as good as the last...the only thing is that one of the guards asked us to stop holding hands when across the room this couple looked like they were all but having sex...but that was a minor detail. And I got a speeding ticket today...but our visit was worth it.
