Default Gary Haugen - OR - 6 Dec 2011 Stayed

"Haugen, 49, essentially volunteered to die by lethal injection, waiving all further appeals of his death sentence.

Barring a change of heart, he will be the first Oregon inmate put to death since double-killer Harry Moore of Salem was executed in 1997."

So sad. He must feel so hopeless. You can read the article here.

"Oregon corrections officials have denied a Statesman Journal request for a prison interview with condemned killer Gary Haugen, who is scheduled to be executed Aug. 16."
It seems the prison is denying all requests to interview. That just doesn't seem right. How do we know he is being taken care of and is still refusing further appeals? Let his voice be out there Oregon!

While I can appreciate Mr.Haugen's choice, to stop the appeals, from what I have read he does want to die. That being said, should he not be allowed a voice? Me thinks the Oregon prison he is in doesn't want him to talk about what really happens in there and to him and the rest on death row.

It's so sad to think Mr Haugen has literally given up on his life. My thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friends during this time.

Condemned killer Gary Haugen wants no part of efforts being made to spare his life.
Speaking to the Statesman Journal on Wednesday from death row at the Oregon State Penitentiary, Haugen said he remains steadfast in his preference to proceed with the Aug. 16 lethal-injection execution.

It's been stayed--at least for now.

The Marion County judge who previously authorized Gary Haugen’s Aug. 16 execution has agreed to set aside the death warrant and conduct a mental competency hearing for the condemned inmate.
Here is the article.

Thanks for this Mammas, I really do hope that the mental evaluation will help Mr Haugen. I also hope the judge makes the right decision, Mr Haugen does not belong on death row !!!!

"Haugen will be examined by forensic psychologist, Richard Hulteng at the Oregon State Penetentiary on August 23rd. The doctor will then produce a report for a competency hearing in September. That's when Marion County Judge Joseph Guimond is expected to decide again on whether to authorize Haugen's execution by lethal injection"

State corrections officials today conducted a practice run of a lethal injection at the Oregon State Penitentiary to prepare for the possible execution of death row inmate Gary Haugen.

It occurred on the same day Haugen originally was scheduled to die, but the execution was canceled in June after the state Supreme Court told a judge to first order a mental competency evaluation for Haugen, who wants to waive his appeals.

His hearing is Sep 27.The story is here.

Unhappy Gary Haugen

Gary Haugen is my foster brother, he is very intelligent and knows what he is doing, I write back and forth with him and he does not want any sadness he is ready to end it. I love him as my friend and brother and I am very sad that he will be executed but it is his choice and I respect it . I hope the courts do.

Welcome to PTO. You will find many friends here. Our community provides support to the family members and friends of those in prison. Thank you for your words regarding Mr Haugen and know that I wish you and him the best. Never can I accept state sponsered killing as justice. Whether the prisoner wants to die or not.

Gary Haugen has been in jail for 30 years. He arrived when he was 19 – after murdering his girlfriend's mother. Four years ago, he was moved from the prison's general population to death row for killing a fellow inmate. He says one reason he wants to be executed is to end his time on death row.
"Hey, it's hell. Be away from your family, be away from your loved ones. Watch all your people die while you sit in this little nine-by-eight cage. The difference between the row and population is that you're stuck with the same 30 some odd people in the same spot for however many years you're on the row fighting," Haugen said.

The hearing is tomorrow. The full article is here.

Naturally, he has a right to choose whether or not to appeal, but surely this is an indication of just how horrific it is on Death row and how Gary feels that there is an inevitable outcome. Clearly he feels he would prefer to end things now rather than pursue 'meaningless' appeals
A very sad story and I hope and pray he changes his mind as there is always some hope but we must respect his decision.

"But Marion County Circuit Judge Joseph Guimond has not cleared the way for Haugen to be executec.
He deferred further action until he meets with lawyers at an Oct. 7 hearing to discuss the next steps.
The judge still must ask Haugen a series of questions to determine whether the twice-convicted murderer is competent to be executed before he issues a death warrant."

Read more here. I don't imagine that Oregon is going to kill him but we'll see what happens. I can't be happy about the prospect though. Very sad.

It is a very sad situation where we hope that a human being has to be judged mentally incompetent in order to spare his life.

Mr Haugen's date has been set. I know this is what he wants to do but I can't feel happy about it. What kind of a system do we have that makes death preferable to prison?

"Death row inmate Gary Haugen was declared legally sane to be put to death and now faces a tentative Dec. 6 execution date. "

The story is here.

A legal-defense center is asking the Oregon Supreme Court to toss aside a circuit judge's ruling that death-row inmate Gary Haugen is competent to be executed, saying that the judge improperly excluded evidence that Haugen is delusional.

Several media outlets are requesting that the judge release the reports that were used to determine Gary's competency.

"But attorneys for Haugen and for the state object to the media organizations' motion, saying the newspapers and wire service don't have legal standing to make the request. The attorneys also said they believe the evaluation includes information that could jeopardize the safety of inmates, employees and others at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem."

I am tired and so is Gary, this is turning into a circus. They are not allowing his spiritual advisers to have contact with him, a reporter from chanell 6 news has been trying to get a phone number approved for several months she is the only one Gary will do an interview with, After 6 weeks they finally approveb my number so at least I can talk to him but he sounds so tired and done with all the stuff trying to stop his execution , it breaks my heart when we talk and I hear him sound like that and every time there is some thing new that they won't let him have or do with no reason just because that's how they decided they want it for that day but the next might have all new rules, they are really violating what little right's he has . There is so much going on at OSP death row they don't want the public to know.
