Default Finding work with a criminal record for theft

HI, Im kinda new to this... Ima 24yr old mother of 3 children and my boyfriend of 8yrs (my kids father) was just sent to the Draper Prison and we live in Salt Lake, and he was our main provider. With him gone I have to go back to work but I have a theft on my backgroung from a few yrs ago and I cant find work because of it, so I was wondering if ANY ONE has info that would help or knows of a place that is willing to hire with a theft on backgroung. Thanks I just dont wanna lose everything we have right now.

best places to go are food related establishments. Many times they don't probe into your background. I would look online at Craigslist.org. I have found my last three jobs there. No background for me, but i feel for ya!

While some might find this morally objectionable, I learned early on to OMIT my criminal history when applying for jobs. My honesty caused me to lose a job that I already had nailed down ahead of time after going to do the 'background check' with an ex FBI agent.
The entertaining part was a year or so after I had admitted I had a criminal record with this guy, another employer sent me to him also.. He didn't even remember me and I passed with flying colors.. Obviously, he wasn't running background checks.

Today the (background checks) are much more easy to obtain (and cheaper), however, if you present yourself well, and you are not in an industry that needs to really check you out, there is a chance you'll get through..

Try Goodwill. A lot of people think they just hire people with disabilities, but that isn't true. They hire people with any problem that make employment difficult: disabled people, felons, people living in shelters, people with little work history. The pay isn't all that great, but there are benefits even for PT employees, and helpful services that come along with employment. Goodwill also has an Employment Service, so they can help you find work even if you don't get hired at one of their stores. Good luck!

Wanted to add that my friend has a Theft by Check on his record, and he worked his way up to Supervisor at Goodwill.

is Goodwill in Utah? I am not sure that they are. If they are, that sounds the best. Many other places employ people with backgrounds. I heard that places with unions do. Many food jobs don't even have the "background" issue on there. I run a subway and we don't check backgrounds.

Are you LDS? We don't have Goodwill (at least, not that I've ever noticed) but we have Deseret Industries. They also have employment services.

Well, you may want to check with your ward employment specialist anyway. She/He may be able to help.

Having a record surely is a challenge. Consider developing your own business. Consider offering child care, in home elder care, or tutoring, etc. If you have good physical health, get a van to carry equipment or supplies for cleaning people's homes. How about leaf clean-up or lawn and garden care, helping people move, and more. In the Salt Lake area there must be a library that offers ideas for self-employment. Being self-employed has many advantages that includes scheduling your own time so that you can be home when your children need you. Do you have items that you don't need that could be offered for sale on Craigslist? Do you know someone who might consider working with you on any of the above or other services?
