Default TV's in prison?

Hi there! I am new to this site. My son will be transfered soon to one of the Arizona's prisons. I have heard that you can buy a tv for an inmate. Does anyone know if this is true and how much it cost? Any info on this would be great! Thank you!

I live in Illinois and some prisons down here can have t.v's. I snt my husband money for a t.v and I think it was close to $185 bucks but all prisons my vary also it depends on what type of t.v they want such as a flat screen or just a regular old t.v or used. You can call the prison and ask them if they will allow the inmates a t.v and the prices. Ask to speak with an inmate counselor. They might give you a price but more then likely they will answer your question as far as if the inmate can have a t.v. Whenever I want to know something about the prison I just go straight to the source(the prison) hope this helps.

You can send them money for their books & they can buy it from store. Last I heard they were around $275. Expensive but worth it.

In the AZ state prisons prisoners can only purchase tv's from them store. Your son will let you know the price rather quickly im sure.

Yes T.V.'s in AZ they have a few and both not always in stock. I have not heard over $200 in Douglas Yuma or Tuscon.

Yes, they can buy TVs through the store and they are expensive - $275 sounds right. It is well worth it though - it helps my husband keep up with what is going on outside of the prison.

Since my son will be in phase 1, sounds like he can only spend $40.00 a week. Will they let him buy a TV when he first arrives there? How much can I put on his books at one time? He will only be there for a year.Thank you for your help!

Major purchases like tv's, cd players, etc., don't count against the $40.00 limit. Technically you can put as much money on his books that you wish to. However, the larger the amont the longer it takes to clear. I'd send him one money order for $250.00 then wait a couple days and send another $250.00. This should be enough to get him started.

I am new to this and not real sure how this works. Sent a message regarding any matters happening in Douglas ASPC right now. My son has not written in 2 weeks and he knows he has to send me a note once a week since we can't visit or have phone calls just yet. Just wondering if anyone out there knows if Mohave North is having some issues that he might not be able to send me a letter. I am getting really concerned and just want some relief. I will call prison if I don't hear in the next few days. Thanks anything appreciated.

Philly.... It could be he is low on stamps, envelopes, or paper. They can borrow from friends but sometimes it takes a few weeks. You can go to the DOC websight and look at prison locations and then choose douglas then scroll down. If there is a visitation issue it will show there.

@Arizonamom .... any amount over $300 in a money order gets a 10 day hold. You can send post office money orders or a cashiers check and those won't be held. TV is like $275, but I wasn't sure if the phase they are in makes a difference.

This list is a few years old, but should give you an idea of what things cost in store.

Hi. I can tell you absolutely for a fact that a TV in AZDOC will cost just over 250$ plus tax. They are digital however DOC will provide a few cable stations. There are two different TV's to choose from and the price is about 10$ difference. RCA and something else I can not remember. Either one is fine.A television is one of those things that a fella really really needs in prison. Tell your son that the key to prison is to do any and all programming that the complex offers during the day and watch TV and work out at night. Stay away from the crowd that just hangs out. Also, right away I would highly suggest that you contact the METH Program on the Tucson/Santa Rita Unit and ask them to register your son. Your phone call from out there will hold a lot of weight I assure you.
What your son does in prison will determine what kind of man your son leaves prison as. Give him love and support, the first 6 months will be the worst. His lifeline will be the programming DOC offers, specifically the METH Program. It is a 6 month residential program on Yard 3 at Santa Rita in the Tucson Complex.
I wish you both luck.

Thank you for the advice, but my son was not on meth or any other drugs. He is in Safford-Graham unit 2 yard and will be there for about 8 months. I told him to take as many classes as he can, just to stay busy.

It's up to you. My son was only sentenced to one and a half years, but will end up doing about 8 months.....it makes the time go by so much faster. It keeps him busy and out of trouble. My husbands step sister was in prison for 6 years, she got a TV and brought it home with her when she was released.

Default TV Costs

In sept 2009 the costs for the tvs were:
(PLUS TAX)

KTV 13" Digital Color TV = $250.64
RCA Digital TV 13" = $245.00

Prices have increased twice in the last year

I as an ex inmate of the illinois prison system can tell you that you cannot buy the television for him. You will have to send the money for the t.v. to him in the form of different money orders. Some prisons have a limit as to how much you can put in on money order. The money will then go into his inmate account. He will then have to go to the inmate commissary and purchase the television that way. He will do a easier sentence with a t.v., it keeps your mind at ease and also helps keep you occupied and out of trouble.

Yes, you can get them a tv when they are in phase 1. I sent my son the money for his tv as soon as he got to the yard. Where is yor son doing his time? Mine is in Safford-Graham...he's been there about 3 months now...he went in on September 27th.
