My friend is in Smyrna, DE at the James T. Vaugh Correctional Center in the pre-trial area. He had his trial last Wednesday, and he will be transferred to MCI. Today, he apparently got moved to the VOP area of Smyrna, and is awaiting a room at MCI. He said that he now has a phone around him all the time. He called me today on my cellphone collect, which does not accept collect calls. I accepted the call, and it gave me 25 minutes. It did give me a warning that I had 5 minutes remaining. While he was in the pre-trial area, I setup a $50 phone card with PCS. As of the other day, I had $27 left on the card. When I called the company today, they said that there was still $27 on the card, and they had no record that he had called. I even called Verizon, and they said that my phone shouldn't accept collect calls, and that it only took from my minutes. Did I get a free call? It can't be that good! If not, how am I going to be billed?
Here in ky, the inmate is given a free 5 minute call after they are transferred, to let someone (family/wife/husband etc) know that they have been transferred. It has to be accepted by pressing "one" but is not collect. I've never heard of a 25 minute free "collect" call.
So yea, that 25 minute phone call was free. I was AMAZED!! He called me later last night, and we had a 20 minute phone call for $9.99. It was better rates than we were paying, but it's whatever. I can't believe it. I talked to my cellphone company (Verizon) and they said that it just took from my minutes. I did not agree to any charges, and they said that there would be none. It was such a pleasant surprise. Sending a little prayer out to everyone that they get a phone call like that. Best wishes friends!!!
