The Schwarzenegger administration wants the University of California to manage medical care at state prisons. The change could improve care and save the government about $12 billion over the next decade. KPCC’s Julie Small reports.
Under the proposal the University of California would manage dental, medical and psychiatric care in the state’s 33 prisons.
While consultations with the UC medical staff are wonderful, this is not a feasible solution to the problems. In the long run, it will cost more than it does now.

if I imagine this in the "day life situation" I have to ask how this should be organised. how could this work? as of course telemedicine can work in a few cases, but if such a change would happen, it would mean a huge organisation and what did cost cdc before would after cost the University...... ????? maybe I dont understand this really, but most of all as the examples of the docs in the comment show (being in prison for using marihuana for medical reasons!!!) things should be changed on the roots: this means to sentence guys in a different way.
and if the whole care would go to the docs ..... I work long enough in the health system to know who is going to do the job in prisons: it would be those they are not complete trained, they are learning to be a doc, or they get their first experiences..... as those docs they are specialists, they already have a lot of work: how could they do more?
I see, there are too many things i dont seem to understand! ......... but I am only a psychiatric nurse which is used to have a personal contact to the patients..... maybe out of the reason no computer or tv can replace this!
I read an blogger's comment on this issue who said she worked in a lab stirilizing dental instruments. She said those that came from prison facilities were absolutely filthy, so much worse than those that came from private dental offices.
If this is an indication of the kind of care these men get, and I think it is, for all I've read. Then I would think this proposal would be welcomed, regardless of the cost. Perhaps if the prisons trimmed the trans-fats, it could balance the extra cost.
