who regulates medical care and health violations at the county jails?
Who is responsible for the standard of care or lack of in a county jail? Who oversees if there are qualified doctors on board and if the inmates are screened and properly taken care of? There must be some county or state regulators who can investigate a county jail to see if they are adhering to proper requirements and standards. anyone know??
County jails are run by the county. LA County runs the LA County jail for example.
All jails, whether county, state, city or federal are ultimately accountable to CRIPA, located in Washington, DC.
Most county facilities contract with outside agencies for the physicians. It is not always the same company. Correctional Medical is one of them. To find out exactly who the county jail you are referring uses, you can check their web site, or you can call and ask.
There is very little if any oversight of what goes on, and even less standard to check the credentials of the "doctors". Many have expired or revoked licenses in one state, so they flee to another state and work in the correctional system. I wish that I could tell you who does the oversight at the jail level to make sure proper screening and evaluations are done.
The pitiful reality is that we do it! Some are better at it than others. We are the ones who ask about continued medication, shared razors, TB screening, etc.
Since I do not know the specifics of your concern, I am not sure how to direct you.
