EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - A former inmate who accused federal prison workers in Illinois of defiling his Quran and torturing him with a nightstick when he complained has settled his federal civil rights lawsuit.
A federal judge in East St. Louis last week announced the settlement involving Hakeem Shaheed and gave attorneys for both sides two months to finalize the deal. Terms aren't yet disclosed.
Shaheed's attorneys haven't returned messages seeking comment Thursday. A federal prosecutor representing several of the defendants declined to comment.
