Another mail question
Ok I have another question. My mail just came back from UCI, I hand write my letters, and they were between 6-9 pages long. They came back, with a reason, new law about 5 page limit, which I didnt relize it was about hand written letters, although all my letters have kindly came back. Can anyone shed some light on this, Im feeling rather P***D off right now.

Hi! How have you been?
Thats the first I have heard about that rule. Only 5 pages? Sounds like more b/s thought up to make things difficult. I might go and have a look on the Fla DOC web page to see if there`s anything about it in there.

Yes, the law passed last year about October or so. They now allow only 5 pages per envelope of anything at all so only five pages either typed, hand written, printed jokes whatever there cannot be more than 5 pages in an envelope. If you ask me it is just creating more work for them cause people are writing "continued in next envelope" in their letters so the mail room has 10 times more stuff to open. If you ask them it makes each envelope easier to screen.
Dumb law yes...typical for Florida...yes!

Bella
does that include photos as well. Like is it now 5 items, or 5 of each. I am so confused, this has never happened before, but in my letter it says that it falls under the new law. I just hope that it doesnt happen with all my mail, I have sent more since those letters around 8 pages. Funny thing was, it cost me $3.30 to send it from Australia, and to return 4 letters to me, it cost them over $12. What a waste, they should of just let it go through and give me a warning. Anyway, least I know now when my mail comes back that I can only write 5 pages. I think I am going to have to go buy double sided paper.

mail
They seem to apply that "law" however they choose, depending on the institution. Where my husband is, my letter can be as long as I want, however, I can only enclose 5 additional items. Picture's, jokes, etc. all count towards the total of 5! Also, depending on WHO is working the mailroom when your other letters arrive, they may or may not be returned. Good luck! I personally make sure that I don't "violate" their "5 page" rule so that they have no excuse to return my mail. It's just easier that way.

These letters were just hand written letters, about my boring life, and exceeded the 5 page limitation. Like the letters were over 5 pages, they were just hand written. There was nothing in them that was wrong, maybe me having a whinge about the kids or something, but nothing really interesting. I just cant believe they returned hand written mail, as it exceeded the limit. On the DOC site, is says that you can send as much hand written correspondence as you like. My mail has never been returned, I always try and get a decent letter out, as Im sending from Australia. Who knows with Florida, I bought double sided paper tonight, to be able to write more within the 5 pages. They will probably send that back to, saying to much reading for them.

I wasn't aware of this law. But I've never sent anything over 4 pages to Union. I did send 9 handwritten pages to FSP last year and they got through, but that was last year.

This is all new to me... The way the DOC site in Florida states about mail, is that you can write as many pages as you want to, but can only have 5 additional items in the letter. I would personally print off the rules from the web site and send it to the staff there at his institution with a request for additional information from them as to what new law their talking about. Ask them for the code number so you can see the law for yourself. I personally haven't heard anything about it. You would think that at least the inmates would get a copy of new rules and regs as their passed down.

I never have heard about this new law either. I don't seem to have much of a life as you,Kyla, to write more than 5 pages, boring or otherwise ,but I think it is stupid to send handwritten letters back. I usually send a 2 or 3 page letter with up to 5 additional pages of whatever(jokes, news, etc.) to him each time I write him. At times, I even include a book of postage stamps along with those items. I have not had any problems.....yet. Yvonne

Well I"m in michigan and I sent my boyfriend a 25 page letter and it got sent back. On the letter enclosed it says 10 page limit. I think that law is going to spead to every state in a while. oh by the way the 25 pages was just on the front not front and back and it was done on a computer so i might have use to big of a font. So now what I do is type letters front and back up to ten pages and use smaller fonts if i need to. Oh by the way I got two letters return in two weeks because there were in their words to freaky.

I knew about there not being allowed more than 5 extra items in an envelope, and I alway adhere to that, but my letters that I mail Trav each day are at least 12 pages plus I may add a joke or a few article, drawings, etc. Nothing comes back... ON the DOC site it just means items not letters, so now more than 5 pix, jokes etc.
