Cool Update on Mich Prison Closures

Per the MCO (Mich Corrections Officers union)

"Due to the continued decline of the prisoner population and ongoing budget constraints of the current and next fiscal year, the Department has indicated that several facilities will likely close by October 1st. While the naming of specific facilities on the chopping block was expected by the end of May, the Department is now indicating that this announcement will come next week.

Once an announcement is made, then MCO will sit down with the MDOC under the terms of the contract to discuss the ramifications on the membership. It is always our intent to mitigate the impact to MCO members as much as possible, however as previously indicated, there is concern that layoffs will be unavoidable this time around."

I guess that means more paroles, and more unemployed guards.

No problem - I get the MCO emails, I'm on their preferred list :-D. By the by, the public relations campaign that they have going with the bulletin boards with the goal of letting the public know they have the toughest job in Michigan (I posted on this earlier), is costing $1 million dollars. Yes. $1,000,000.

Thanks for the update. Where can we find a list next week of what locations are closing? Thanks again for keeping people in the loop. Have a great day!

Hub just told me they're closing MCF, Standish and Hiawatha, along with several camps and anticipate laying off 1000 employees.
