Question what does it mean - "post release parole"?

my boyfriend took a plea deal for ten years in prison he got a paper saying after he is released he will be on post release parole what does that mean ?i thought if you took a deal you maxed out your time or does that mean he may get early like in five years like he said his lawyer hoped for

It doesn't matter if the sentence is part of a plea agreement or came after a jury found one guilty.

Some states require a post-incarceration period of supervision as partof the sentence. Not sure how that works if someone is released early ornot, whehter the parole period gets lengthened or not.

I think it depends on the state, but my boyfriend got 3.5 years + 5 years post-release supervision, and I'm pretty sure in NY that 5 years starts from the max out date. So if he got out in 2.5 years, he'd be on parole until his max out date at 3.5 years, and then for 5 years after that.
