My friend, I don't know enough about the youth facilities to give you an answer but I can share with you that there is a wonderful woman that works in DOC that used to help me out on my cases that I work on that transferred over to the youth program. Her name is Joan Palmiter (spelling may be wrong on the last name) but she is wonderful and she can probably help you out with your questions. Truely she is wonderful. I hope this helps. I just wanted to make sure that you were not left hanging as your youth needs you for sure!!! Make sure he does not make it to the "big show" for sure.

Take care my friend,

Dawn

"The big show" Dawn was referring to is the DOC --prison. In other words, I think she was thanking you for being there for him and supporting him in Juvie, before he is old enough and does something to get him landed in prison. None of us want to see him do "hard time". I would encourage you to visit as often as you possibly can, as this will help him greatly to know he has support and love. It isn't easy on the kids that go to these programs, they need to know you are there for them, and with them. Also, write letters often. That is all the advice I have to give-- as a past foster parent that has gotten lots of kids from some of these different places.

Hello,

Indeed what I was saying is him having your support while in juvie will hopefully end the cycle of his time in the system. What I meant by the big show is the adult correctional facilities. Sorry, I need to be careful with the slang. You son is blessed to have such a wonderful mom to support him. Welcome to PTO by the way.

Dawn

All of the youth prisons are extremely differently from one another and serve more specific purposes than most of the adult prisons. Since NCTCF is very small (only 50 beds) and new, I recommend you contact the institution directly to get the most comprehensive, up-to-date info.

Here is a bit of info on the place http://www.oregon.gov/OYA/facilities/northcoast.shtml

It's great your son has your support, but just as you are not the reason he is there, you will also not be the reason should he stay in the system. Best wishes.

Default Thank you

Thank you all for your support. It's wonderful to hear caring thoughts!!

I have another question. My son went into a plea of 18 months. His original charge was delivery/possesion of a controlled substance. He is 18 and this is his first offense. However, the possesion charge was set over for a year, to next march Why is this? His attorney(court appointed) says he will probably get probation. but, I'm still really worried. I think it's B.S.

Any advise??

Thank you,

Well, I may not be right since every situation is unique, but ....
If they offered to drop the charges if he pled guilty to a lesser crime, the initial charge it would have been dismissed and not set over. Are you sure he actually pled guilty to a lesser charge? Were you there at sentencing? It sounds like he was given the option to complete drug treatment; they will revisit the charge in a year and review his progress. This is typical for first-time drug offenders. If this is the case, and the charge is still open, he needs to sucessfully complete treatment to only get probation.

He pled to the 18 months for both Del/poss. (so I thought) But, in court that's when there was the set over for the possession charge. I just don't understand why they split it up like that. So, basically he could end up doing more time if he doesn't do this program. It's just not fair, to keep him on the hook like that. He already doing 18 months. And it's his first offense.
