Default Gunnison vs Draper

So.. I've heard a lot that Draper is REALLY bad and Gunnison is a nice place, as far as prisons go. Anyway, my husband says that he may qualify to be transfered to Lone Peak up at Draper and he really wants to do it because he says that he could get work release or something. I don't really understand this.. but could anyone give me some insight on this?

I'm worried about him going to Draper because of everything I have heard. I told him my feelings and he says that it really doesn't make a difference - Gunnison, or Draper - it's the same every where. I don't know.

I have a friend in Draper and he hates it! He says it's really dirty, cruel and awful there. However he does go to college there, so I could imagine that they could also have something like work release and programs like that. I don't really know anything about Draper other than what he tells me and from his words, it sounds terrible! But if they have that kind of program that you're talking about, then maybe Draper can be okay. I don't know. Sorry that I can't be of more help.

Oh, forgot to mention that Lone Peak is the minimum security part of Draper so there might be some advantages for your husband there.

Default Tell me about Gunnison?

My son is at the Olympus Mental Health Unit at Draper, Utah and he seems to always think that the grass is greener everywhere else. I do have to admit that he is much happier at Olympus than he was in the State Hospital in Provo! They were so picky about every little thing! I'm sure they thought it was the right thing but it never taught my son anything about self-control!
Now he wants to go to Gunnison, if he gets the chance, because of the education opportunities and work possibilities that he has heard about. The main problems are, of course, I could only see him once a month instead of every week and the biggest problem is that it would be general population and with his charges that might put him in danger.
My son had never been in trouble in school or with the law at all until he had a severe brain injury when he was 16. After the injury, an evil ex-brother in showed him gay porn and in the guise of a friendship seduced him with talk about it and then promised to pay him $6.000.00 to have sex with him. The man bought him things and gave him money instead of paying his family bills. With this trauma added to his injury he eventually became schizo and was tormented with voices from morning till night for at least 8 years. He eventaully sexually touched two young boys who begged a ride from him on his motorbike and was caught.
He is now aware of how terrible actions were and feels that he has repented and is on a new track and is doing so much better than he has been in the last 15 years. He no longer hears voices but his reasoning is still out of whack sometimes regarding somethings....not the pedophile stuff though. He just wants to have a nice normal life with a wife. He's quite sure that it will never happen but still hopes.
He wants to know if he will be beat up and harrassed if he goes to general population at the Gunnison Facility. Could you see what your husband thinks might happen? He is hoping to get some kind of training and education so that when he gets out he can be employed.
Thanks

My husband has had no problems in Gunnison (that he's told me about anyway) but I have heard about occasional fights (like any prison...or like any workplace for that matter.) I believe the population in Gunnison is 85% sex offenders so there isn't as much of a problem with GP as other places.

I suggest you spend some time in the LASO (Loving A Sex Offender) forum and you will find a wonderful group of people that have been where you are. Make sure you scroll down to the bottom of the page and move the ads to the right side (there's a drop down box.) For some reason the ads split the LASO threads.

There are good and bad at any prison. Gunnison is a newer prison, that's for sure. My husband did all his time at Draper and it wasn't all that bad. If your husband can get to Lone Peak, or in Conquest at Draper those are good programs. Lone Peak is a Minimum security area and they also have contracts to do work outside the fences. They train them in a trade and yes they do earn the ability to get ferlows to go home on the weekends. So that's a definate benefit. Conquest is a tough and rigorous program but I know of several people that were looking at 10 and 15 year rehearings and went through conquest and they were out within a year of completing it. There are bad things and good things at any prison. Is Draper a little dirtier? Yes of course it's also old and in areas getting run down, the way Gunnison will be one day. There are more gang members etc in Draper but if you know how to be a "good" prisoner you can make it anywhere. If you live up here then that is also a benefit because you don't have to drive so far to see him and the calls aren't long distance, just the 3.80 or whatever it was per call.

The one thing you want to do, when your loved one is in prison, is be supportive. Put your input and your fears out there but if he wants to better himself let him make those choices and be supportive of his decisions. You can always talk to his case worker and see if they can give you what his chances are of getting into lone peak and maybe he can apply to go there and wait at Gunnison until he is accepted. That's always an option.

Gather your information. Good luck with everything!!!

Since I posted this, my husband and I have talked about this a lot and I finally just had to go with whatever he felt was best for him and our family... Oh, and I live in Indiana so whether he's in Draper or Gunnison, it's still a plane ride for me. Thanks for your response though!
