Can anyone tell me what is the difference between inmates incarcerated to Polunsky Unit and Terrell Unit, Livingston Texas? Is it maybe the same place?
Thanks to anybody will explain to me...
they changed the name from Terrel unit into Polunsky unit,I have been told Mr Terrel didn't want death row called after him,he might be against the death penalty!
So yeah Terrel and Polunsky is the same place.
As Lill'Magic stated - Polunsky unit is the former Terrell unit located on the outskirts of Livingston, Texas. It is a Maximum Security facility, very similar to others located across the state. It is a newer facility as well. I have a friend who is a kitchen sergeant there, as well as a family member who has a home nearby. When a new unit opens in Texas, the units across the state normally transfer their problem inmates there...so it was rough going for awhile.... but the unit has settled down. The staff in general is very strict there, and with good reason. Staff assaults have been numerous, as well as incidents of inmate fights, etc. Not a friendly place, but then it shouldn't be either. Some advice to family members of incarcerated inmates there - tell them to do as they are told, be respectfull, and keep their noses clean. This will help them avoid most of the negative things people hear about. I am a former correctional officer, and know many officers who worked there, and some that still do.
The man that Terrell Unit is named after does indeed have reservations against the death penalty, and Texas's use of it. Everything was fine having a Texas prison named after him, until the state moved Death Row to Terrell Unit from Ellis Unit in Huntsville. After an escape from Ellis Unit in late 1998, a security review foud that moving death row to Terrell Unit was warranted. Others say that the move of death row to Terrell was planned by TDCJ before the escape from Ellis. Either way, it was done. Mr Terrell then went public with opinions against the death penalty, protesting havign his name on a unit housing death row. After that, the Terrill Unit was renamed to Polunsky.
I want to be clear on something here. Many of the"problems" at Polunsky occur in the Population area of the prison. As for being very strict I went to the Ellis unit. They are about 50 more times strict at the Ellis unit. As for Polunsky what I have seen is several high profile inmates and their trouble making "friends" being given preferential treatment. It bites! Don't know how much longer I will hold my tongue.
