Question I have a question? What does indigent mean?

What does indigent mean? My boyfriend's back in jail and they transferred him to prison. When I wrote him my first letter to him (at least for this round) it took a really long time to get a letter from him and when it FINALLY came he said "I got to send this letter out indigent cus I don't have any money so I hope you can send me some" I have no idea what that means lol

It means that he doesn't have any money. From what I understand, some prisons will cover the charge for someone for specific things if they have no money but they will only do it for certain things and not all the time. It sounds like the prison covered the cost of this letter for him since he had no way to pay for paper and stamps.

Not sure about where he is at, but at my hubbys prison, I can actually send the paper and the envelopes and the stamps. Maybe you could look into doing that also. This way, he will not have to wait to get to store or anything. Just a thought.

Good Luck to you

It means he's screwed.....! JUST KIDDING! It means he doens't have any $ on his books to pay for the postage. It's also the term used to describe defendants in court who cannot afford their own private lawyer.....thus the State must afford them one as a Constitutional right.

I agree with Patswife-4ever, you may want to check into sending him books of stamps, paper, etc. I only say this because IF he has Restitution, most will be taken by that, which is usually around 55%

And if you do send money, I've found the fastest way is on www.JPay.com assuming your man's prison uses JPay.

Best of Luck to you!

In Arizona when they are indigent status, that means that they have less than $12 on their books for 30 days. The inmate has to apply to receive the inmate pkg.
They will give the inmate their "basic" needs such as soap, toothpaste, etc. They will also give them mail supplies (paper, envelopes, and stamps) for 3 letters a week.
