Post Shutter Creek/Summitt Update

Its been awhile since I've posted any news about the Summitt Program at Shutter Creek, so I've listed a few tidbits of info that are accurate as of September 2008:
  • Memorizing the rules is pretty important as they take quizzes and have to pass them to progress. Thinking errors is an area they really focus on.
  • Men in general population and the Summitt program are allowed to grow their hair out and have facial hair now. Summitt participants no longer have to wear ties which made them look like Elmer Fudd wannabes.
  • Summitt guys can be recycled and have to start over with the next community or if they "lose their program" they'll become general population and serve the rest of their time at Shutter Creek. Summitt and GP guys don't interact.
  • One aspect of the Summitt program is a parenting class. The first step is carrying an egg around and not breaking it then they have stuffed animals until commencement. Just before commencement, they're allowed to pick out stuffed animals to take home for each of their children. On a funny note, apparently there is a really nice CO who reads to the guys at bedtime and...quite a few cuddle up with their stuffed animals while she reads. The visual makes me smile!
  • Work outside the fence consists of helping out at the hospice thrift store, pruning trees in the forest, clearing forestry roads, picking up garbage from the sand dunes, washing local schools, etc.
  • The visiting room is fairly large, the COs are nice, its a very laid back environment in comparison to E.O.C.I. or even Warner Creek. They have tons of board games to play and the candy in the vending machine to visitor ratio seems to be just about right. GP and Summitt guys visit alongside each other, but aren't allowed to talk to each other.
  • Parking is inside the gate which means you are checked in before you're allowed in the gate. No metal detectors. Underwire bras can be worn, yippee!
  • Summitt phone calls are only 10 minutes long and they have to monitor themselves via timer to ensure they don't exceed 10 minutes.
I think that concludes today's update. Hopefully somebody finds this information useful.

Wow, good job. My deepest respect to you for coming in and being willing to share with us. We appreciate you being willing to give a hand in answering questions. I am proud of you for your success in the program, keep up the good work. Also, you know you have friends here, if you ever need to talk to someone, need support to stay the straight and narrow, what ever the case may be. That is also what we try to do here at PTO. So, if ever you are in need of a shoulder to lean on, were are here for you, too. AIP programs are among our least known about prison parts, that give us the most questions. It will be nice having you around to answer questions for us. Thanks.
