From the home page of TDJC website(http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/index.htm):

The Ombudsman Office has been advised by the Private Facilities Contract Monitoring/Oversight Division that there will be no visitation this weekend (August 16th and 17th) at the Bridgeport Correctional Center (male facility) due to an intestinal virus affecting both offenders and staff.

The Bridgeport PPT (female facility) will have regular visitation hours this weekend.

Dang, I hope they will be able to get this under control quickly. This is a good time for us to remember to write our loved ones and stress to them the importance of washing their hands regularly, while in TDC. When a person is living in that type of environment, good hygine can't be stressed enough!

Default First visit to Bridgeport Unit TX Prison

I have never posted before, so I hope I'm doing this right.

We just made our first visit yesterday to the Men's Bridgeport Unit to see our son. We are very impressed with this unit. It is so much nicer than the Wynne Unit. It is much smaller and the atmosphere is much more relaxed. It is air conditioned. The medical staff is very caring and very thorough. When we arrived at the Bridgeport Unit yesterday, there was no guard at the front gate and the front gate was not locked. We just pushed open the gate and walked into the front courtyard. The front door of the building also was not locked. We walked into the lobby where we were greeted by a receptionist behind a glass window. She took our IDs, we signed in, and walked through a metal detector into the entry hallway. There we took off our shoes and the receptionist patted us down. It felt more like we were going through airport security than going into a prison. The glass door to the visitation room was just to the right past the metal detector and it remained locked except when visitors entered or exited. We were taken directly into the visitation room where we sat at a table and waited for our son to enter the room through another locked door. There were probably 10 or 12 tables in the room with 4 or 6 chairs at each table. Each family sat at a separate table. Our son had to sit on the opposite side of the table from us. The snack machines were in the visitation room (no ice cream!). All of the employees/guards that we made contact with were very pleasant and polite. We felt very comfortable during the visit. I hope this information helps anyone out there who is planning to go visit at the Bridgeport Unit.
