Does anyone know how long a person is put in seg for? I read on here 6 months but is it always 6 months or is it sometimes less? Anyone with info on seg can help me big time since I am very new to the whole seg thing. My man is in S.R.C.I and I talked to him this morning and everything was good. I didnt get a call from him this evening so I got worried and called and the guard told me he was in seg. So it had to be this afternoon or tonight. I am so worried and scared and I am freaking out. Any info would be a huge help! Thanks guys!
It depends on what they did and their past history. 6 months is the max they can give them, it's usually always less. Oftentimes they get put in seg pending investigation and then they are let out if they are cleared of any wrong-doing. If he was in a fight, they will put them both in the hole until they figure out what happened. If he has never been in the hole before, that is a good thing as he will get less time.

He has never been in the hole before. This is the first time. His brother is in the hole too and they shared a cell so I dont know what is going on. I just hope it isnt too long. Thank you so much for the info, I have been and still am worried sick.
Well, a lot of things are happening with "the move". Oftentimes prisoners get a little bent out of shape when they get moved, so its created tension with guards on the new units. They seem to be really looking for contraband right now. Make sure he has money on his books to buy paper and stamps so he can write. It usually takes 3-5 days to do an investigation and determine his sentence- the longer the investigation the more serious the DR.
I know he was suppose to get more paper and stamps this week but I think he still had some left. I feel a little bit better about the whole thing since getting info from you. It was the whole not knowing how this works that was driving me crazy. I still have to wait to find out whats going on and that is so frustrating. I just wish we could find out. Is there anything diffrent about being in the hole then in general pop besides the obvious? Did anyones man tell them about it?
I think what they get or don't depends on what they are in IMU (Intensive Management Unit) or DSU (Disciplinary Segregation Unit). My husband is currently in DSU.
They get to get out of their cell and out into the "yard", which is a bricked in area with bars over the top, for 30 minutes 3 times a week. This happens if the guards remember or ask loud enough if they want rec. My husband said that his tier (floor) is supposed to get rec on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. Recently the guards have been asking really quietly if they want rec so the guys can't here and then don't get rec. Or last week the guards let the other tier out two days in a row when it was my husband's tier's turn. They get showers after being out for rec.
They can get commissary every two weeks.
Their personal belongings, that they had in general population, are put in property until they are back in general population.
They can't make phone calls.
They can read books from the library.
Some guys are in 2 person cells others are in single cells.
They get to wear lovely orange jumpsuits instead of the regular denim they wear in general population.
This isn't everything but it's what I know at this point.

WOW! How long did your husband get? I can see how aweful it must be on them especially since they are used to going out to yard so much and now they hardly get it. Thanks for the info it helps alot to understand whats going on since I have no idea. I just hope he can write me since I think he is going to miss this weeks commissary. I hate when the guards are like that.
He is in there due to the fight in April. He didn't start it. He was protecting and pulling the guys off of the one that ended up being lifeflighted because they kicked him so hard and so much.
He was told that they knew he was helping the guy but that they had to give everyone the same punishment. He has found out since that is not the case. He got 120 days in the hole with a 50% upper departure (that means they add and additional 50% of the sentence) so that is 180 days plus a $200 fine. He has had clear conduct and no write ups for 3.5 years, the whole time he has been in the DOC, yet guys that were involved and have been in and out of the hole only received a $100 fine. Needless to say he is appealing the whole thing. But at this point it will be October 2, he can get good time which would take 25 days off of the whole thing and put him out of DSU in September. The appeal board have until the beginning of August to respond.
They can write as long as they have paper, envelopes and a writing utensil.
Oh they only let them go to the barber once every 30 days and they have to be in there a certain amount of time (30 days, if I remember correctly) before they can go to the barber. With my husband he had been in DSU for 22 days when it was barber day and he had to wait an additional 30 days, 52 in total before he got a hair cut...boy was he wooly. That's what he said.
LoL well my sweety normally shaves his own head, but if he cant get razors then he will be ruff too. I cant imagine LoL. That really sucks, what happened to your husband is wrong. That is a long time to be gone
(180 days). Especially when you were doing what was right and you know they know you werent at fault. How do you deal with it all? How do you deal with the no calls? I am used to talking 5-6 times a day sometimes more.
Yeah my husband normally completely shaves his head except for his goatee. He hasn't been able to do that at all. He is dealing with a major beard growth the guys are accusing him of being a bear. It has been rough. The worst part was that I found out about the fight via the news and they said someone was shot with several others injured but didn't say who it was or if they had contacted any family of the injured guys.
It sucks not talking. We spoke 1-2 times a day. This is the longest we have gone without speaking in the last 4.5 years. We are writing letters. The worst part is that about 3 weeks after he went to DSU we had a major family crisis and I had to tell him about it in a letter. It has been hard because the family situation is still going on and he has to wait for updates. It has caused some tension between us, him wanting to know more and me not having more to tell him yet.
The way things go for him, if it can be a negative outcome it will. He shouldn't even be in there for what his original charges were. He got screwed over by his lawyer and the judge.
Seems to be the story of our life...we are appealing the original charges but the in-justice system never seems to move quickly.
"The story of my life" its funny you said something like that because my sweety says that all the time. How long has he been in there (prison) and how long does he have left? I remember that fight. I found out about it via PTO then I got info from my sweety about it. He had a call out to church the day that it happened so he didnt know anything about it until it was over and the guard came in and got them out of church. I couldnt imagine what went through your mind when you read about it in the news. I am so sorry about your family problem. That must be so hard having to wait for letters and sending letters out with something like that going on.
I know that if you are not married then you can not go see him because that's what we're going through right now...he got 120 days for a cd with someone else's number on it so not I can't go see him until September, our daughter can go with his mom but not me since we don't get married until October.....Love you Colby
Thats aweful. I cant go see him anyways because I am in California and I cant make the trip right now. I did hear from him today and found out why he is in the hole. It was for a razor found in his cell under his bunk. He said it wasnt his and that he thinks the guard put it there. One thing I can say about him is that if it was his he would tell me it was his, but he swears it wasnt. So I can only take his word for it. I dont know how long he is going to be in there for, but I hope its not too long.
Ok, I would like to remind you ladies that SRCI has an e-mail program for us with our inmates there. That is like mail for them. I am not sure 100%, but I think they can still do the e-mail while they are in the hole. It costs $10.25 a month and you are allowed to send 30 e-mails a month. They can send you 30 also. If I get mine sent early enough in the morning, my brother receives it that same day. The ones he writes and gets into the outgoing mail in the morning, I receive that afternoon. The e-mails over the weekend, are stored up till Monday, and then delivered. It makes it much faster than regular snail mail. Also, it is cheaper if you are writing everyday, than that many envelopes and stamps. You might want to check into it. There are threads on PTO about the e-mail program.

Granny-They have to be level 2 to be able to do the email. Which means they can't do it from DSU. I don't know why they make it that way.
Colbyswife-4 months for a CD with someone else's name on it? I have a hard time believing that was all there was. That is something a lot of guys do, it may be "contraband", but it is not a threat to the institution, so they don't usually give that much time for it. My guy has a bad history of DRs and he recently got 14 days LOP for having something of more value than a CD that had someone else's SID. I know someone who did 2 weeks for having a TV that wasn't his. They had to have charged him with something else for him to get that much time.
mrstx- They sometimes look at their mail more closely when they are in the hole. Even if the razor was his, he shouldn't be telling you it was in a letter. Pretty much everyone has something in there, it's just a fact of life. I'm sorry you have to go thru this and hope they don't give him too much time, but if the razor was made into a weapon, it is serious contraband. BTW, you can send him paperback books in the hole.
