Default Chain reaction - prison overcrowding leads to jail overcrowding

Inmates overrun cell block at Talladega County jail

The Associated Press
8/13/02 8:43 PM

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) -- A cell block at Talladega County Jail was overtaken by inmates Tuesday, ABC 33/40 in Birmingham reported.

Between 40 and 45 inmates at the jail were believed to have taken control of the cell block after an earlier uprising, the station reported. It was not immediately clear whether the uprising had been completely stopped.

The station videotaped inmates being led out of the jail in shackles and being forced to lie face down on the ground. A county commissioner told reporters that those inmates were involved in the uprising but was unsure whether that group included all the inmates involved.

Around 2 p.m., four jail guards were injured when they tried to break up a smaller incident. All four were sent to local hospitals and were released.

The second, larger uprising began after the jail already was in a lockdown. The jail is designed to hold 120 inmates but currently is holding about 200 inmates, the station reported.

Calls to the Talladega County Sheriff's Department were not immediately returned, and officials reached at the Talladega police department and county jail declined to comment
