Death Row Heat

Does anyone know where I can find some information or court rulings about the HEAT these guys suffer? I got a letter from my friend in Florida, where the death row unit is not air conditioned and he's suffering BAD. Some of the guys are trying to come up with a grievance, but would like some information about past lawsuits. Any suggestions would be welcome!

i know, budwoman...i found out this weekend that the building actually has the ductwork for air conditioning, but i guess that would be too much to ask when you can make these poor men suffer!

AprilCat, I know that in past years, all prisons were air conditioned; however the powers that be decided that a/c was a "luxury" and that inmates were in prison to be punished, so they took them out. I know that here in FLA, the only areas that have a/c are the Officer's areas, the Chapel, the visiting room and the infirmary. They are not allowed fans, which to me is horrible. Everyone knows, that in prison, when the heat index goes up, so do tempers and attitudes.

GG: i found out from one of the guys i met this weekend that they DO have a lawsuit in and they have all been going back and forth with it since 1991!!! i guess fdoc picks the rare, cool, rainy day to come and take cell temps! there should be a ruling on the situation in DECEMBER! gotta love the timing. i'll let you know if i find out anything else.

Hi Aprilcat,

I have news about this issue "Death Row Heat." One of the guys - my roommates best friend - filed a suit against DOC and they went last week to court. Seem the judge was very underatndable. He will take a few days, but the finally dicision will come out soon. Hope they will place fances in there !

Well if no airconditioning is the bottom of the list of horrible things people suffer from in prison that works as a big deterent for me never to break the law. I work in the Texas heat but at least I can come home and crank up the air conditoner to deep freeze temps. The kids have to watch TV with a blanket. dammmmmm it's HOT!

Where are the human rights activist on this issue?
Amnesty Inernational doesn't have an issue or two on anything over 100 degrees might be a bit inhumane? I don't think animal shelters will keep a live animal in such conditions.
Where are the people that were crying out for the poor Taliban prisoners? I think it was 89 degrees in Cuba that day they protested it was too hot for them. Not that they shouldn't protest but they were at least outside with a breeze and shade. Inside is much more stiffling and hotter.

AC...do these guys at least get fans? I would think as bad as the heat has been this summer they would have to at least make fans available. I know in Texas the guys can have fans but they have to be purchased with their own funds through commissary ..my friend has told me though that when the heat index crawls up into the 100's that the fans really don't make much of a difference.

AGS ~ unfortunately, no fans are permitted at florida's death row. i guess ages and ages ago, someone took one apart and used the "innards" for something the doc wasn't too fond of, so there went the fans. basically, these guys have no air flow. the windows are all at angles, so air really can't flow through those, either. it's essentially a sweatbox. thank god for the little things, i suppose ~ like little plastic fans....

April, in Alabama they are trying to come up with a way to file lawsuits as the heat and the prisons doing nothing about it being cruel and unusual punishment. They dont even have circulation fans here. Death Row inmates in AL are suffering bad too. You know it is sad, cuz even the animal welfare control people make sure that he shelters are cooled for the animals. There are laws to protect the dolphins, whales, alligators, and such but nothing to protect an inmate or an unborn baby.

That's sooooo true..... Several concerned people called the warden in UCI, to complain about the increasable heat on the row. And this was what I exactly said to him !

No a/c but fans on illinois death row. The guys have to buy them at the commissary.

hello aprilcat,

no their is nothing i know of my boyfriend is on deathrow in ga and the says he sleep on the floor to get some cool air. the only time he feels air is when we visit or his family visits. i day i visited they even cut the air off in visitation. i pray tey will get some releif. even in winter he freezes to death.
