Hi,
My fiancee has been incarcerated in Delaware for 13 years, and I'm pretty familiar with the system here. Let me know what questions you have & I'll try to help.
Julie
My Husband Was Extradited From Ny State To Delaware, And He Is Currently In Dcc. Do They Offer Any Programs For Inmates And Families, Or Inmates With Children? Can An Inmate Marry In Dcc? How Is The Visitation/phone Calls After Removed Frpm Pre-trial To Prison
Hi,
I don't check in here often enough, and you might've already found out what you needed to know, but here are answers your questions. There aren't any programs specifically for inmates with children that I know of, and they have Marriage Seminar, which is a class for couples that usually runs from April-June one night a week for about 1 hr. Unfortunately they don't allow inmates to marry, which is something we've been fighting for years. We consider ourselves married even though they don't. The guys can participate in Life Skills and many other programs that are very helpful, and some of the programs have special family visits ("banquets") once a year. There is also graduation from Life Skills, which family members get to attend. After 1 year with no write-ups, medium & minimum inmates can qualify for an honor visit (up to 2/yr)., which is a 3-hour family visit outside at the picnic tables, where you can bring food & drinks (with certain regulations of course). The honor visits are on Sat. or Sun. depending on where he's housed, usually from 11-2 between April-Sept. (weather permitting). I hope this helps. If you need any more info you can PM me or e-mail me at silverprincess210@hotmail.com. Good luck!
My Dad is at DCC. We just had an honor visit two weeks ago to celebrate my graduation from college. Juliet, my understanding is that inmates on good behavior can have 2 honor visits a year. My Dad plans on having another in September.
He participates in several life skills/anger management programs, plus church and the church choir. He's busy 5 out of 7 nights a week. He works during the day, also.
Phone calls are limited to two 10 minute calls a week, which sucks. Visits are two 45 minute visits a week, or one 1 1/2 hour visit. I like going on week days because weekends are overcrowded and it's hard to hear.
Maddy
Hi Maddy,
We have the same deal - I always go on Sunday mornings & holidays, and once in a while I take off & go on a weekday, but I have issues with the weekday staff, so I try to avoid weekdays unless we really need the whole 90 minutes. I hate the phone call limits, because 10 minutes is so short I barely even remember all the stuff I wanted to tell him before that annoying 2 minute-warning comes on. Twice a week isn't often enough to catch up, and if he uses his calls back-to-back we have such a long wait until we can talk again. Sounds like you planned the honor visits just right - that's exactly what I was going to suggest. September is a nice month for honor visits, and it's better to space them farther apart. One year he made the mistake of scheduling the first one in the last week of April & the 2nd one at the end of May, and we had to wait almost a year to have another one. Well I have to get back to work. Hope we talk again soon. Congratulations on your graduation!
