Default Looking for cross necklaces made from yarn

I have a friend who got a cross necklace made out of red and black yarn while he was deployed in the War. He received it from a prison inmate and said it was the best thing he has ever received. He said whenever he took it off is the only time he got injured. He has since lost the necklace, and I am wondering if anyone knows how to make them, or where to get another? I followed a google search here from someone who had a purple and white one made...
Thank you :-)

could you try and locate the inmate and write him and explain the situation to see if they might make another one for him?

My son was wearing a red and white cross made of yard when he was released from jail in Dec. , so I would guess that they are pretty common in jail. Unfortunately he is back in ( as of Friday ) and will spend his 19th birthday locked up. I wish he would of remembered how much his cross meant when he first got out. Good luck on finding a new cross, I'm sure there are more out there.

To JamiesFeatherwood, It was back during Desert Storm, he doesnt even know who the inmate was, so sadly we cant locate him.
To 2blu, would your son remember where he got it from?

Here is a site with instructions on making one. Maybe you could make one for him.

I have seen those before, JJ makes them all the time in jail. he is wearing about 3 of them around his neck now and he sent me a smaller one in the mail.
I dont know if they are made of yarn, I think they are made of string. but i will ask him. He does a really good job making them!

We have four, sent home from the county jail, made from the thread of the blankets there, have no idea how to make them though. They were our Christmas gifts.

*Fairy dreemer*, does he make them to give out, or will he make one to give out, or at least tell you how to make one? :-) And how to do red and black string combo?
*mrsdragoness* can you get an idea from the pattern, and give me a hint as to how?

The kind of necklace you are wanting is made out of string and takes about three hours to make. My question here is does he remember if it was red, or red and white and does he remember if the "necklace" part of it was spun? I ask because many of us ex-offenders know how to make them and just to have some idea would make it easier to make. The cross is actually made out of eight really long pieces of string that are braided using the four method and it actually starts out as two pieces that are joined into one. Not sure if I can do it anymore, but I'll try it tomorrow and let you know. I used to make store by making this kind of "jewelry" and I did it by using "string" from state towels and dying it, so I am thinking it will be a lot easier to make out here in the free. At the very least, pm me and I can tell you how to do it. It is kind of tedious and it's perfect work for when you are sitting in front of the t.v.

I make these necklaces with yarn and plastic canvas. You cut the plastic canvas into the shape of a.cross( you choose the size) then you choose the color yarn you want and cross-stitch inside of the holes. Then you select a trim color and just straight stitch around the perimeter of the cross. Use a large eye needle to accommodate the size of the yarn. Then you make a chain and attatch it to the cross. I've made so many of these and they are very popular.
