He can seal the envelopes before sending them out, so nobody reads what he writes UNLESS he is on a list of inmates who they have to keep a special eye on for security purposes.

His incoming letters are opened by Mail Room staff and they shake the pages to make sure you didn't try to sneak anything in to him. They don't, however, sit there and read every letter. If they did read all that mail, they'd have to hire lots more people! Even so, don't ever write about his case or anything that a Mail Room person might find to be offensive or contraband. Is better to be safe than sorry.

You can use any name you want to in the return address, but WHY?

I'd better be using a last name that's different from that of my loved one... we are not married, nor are we immediate family, so it would be an odd coincidence if we shared a name

In general, no mail is not "read" just shaken out for contraband and skimmed briefly for key words or phrases that might indicate trouble- For the first year or so of writing, I was afraid to use words like "escape" or "abscond" in any context for fear of being misinterpreted
If an inmate is under investigation for any reason, his mail, incoming and outgoing, might be not only read word for word, but copied for future reference.

I know one of my girl's husband was locked up for a domestic against her. There was a no contact order placed by the judge but she kept writting him under a different last name so neither of them would get in trouble. He sent her letters under the same alias name. The prison never caught it or atleast never said anything to either of them.

I don't know about Ohio but here in MI they only open and look over incoming mail - not outgoing mail unless they are under investigation like LeBeau said.

My brothers girlfriend is always writing my bro and using different names on her mail. He writes her under "alias" names too. For absolutly no reason. It is there little inside joke they crack up about. I am not really sure why but they think it is hilarious.

Curiousmonkey, I worked in the system in the state of Ohio.

While what everyone has told you is correct, I would still suggest watching what information you put in his letters because they can be read from front to back if the person doing the mail that day sees something they feel is suspicious. Remember that he has no right to privacy, I would just keep that in the back of my mind.

It doesn't matter what name you use in the return part of the address, just so you put one on the envelope. They won't even mess with mail that has no return address on it...he won't get it if there isn't one.

Pictures even remotely close to showing any nudity or being considered "porn" are forbidden. He won't get them, they would toss them, and he would get an IR filled out on it. IR = Incident Report.

Generally speaking, they DO open the letters, shake them out, look closely in the inside of the envelope, and if they don't see anything to raise their eyebrows over, they stuff it back in the envelope and on it's way it goes.

In Florida I know that one facility he was in (Calhoun) they definitely read our letters (at least the ones I sent). I number every page and a few times he got them out of order and one time he said "they must have gotten bored because they stopped on page 6 (of a 20 page letter).

it depends on where you are at.. here they can do anything from read it to copy it before sending it out to me.. he is not allowed to seal an envelope that is being sent out... Any and all incoming personal mail is read and or copied before being given to an inmate in the State of Florida. its the same with phone calls all are taped and if a word is used its flagged then they listen as you are on the phone. But after 8 years I don't care what I put in my letters anymore I write to him if the mail room wants to get off on my letters oh well as long as I am not doing anything I shouldn't be then I don't worry about it. I do know if I sent in a really good joke to him it takes him a day or so longer to get it cause its going around the place for everyone to see...

I use his last name on my letters as he writes them to me like that even though we are not married on paper and can never be (I would lose to much to do that) we are in our hearts and to me thats all that counts besides it pisses him off to see me use my last name on his letters or anywhere else for that matter because of the way my ex was.. if I didn't have to deal with a name change with the military I would change my name to his and have done with it without marrying him.

If you are using the same address as before I would be careful if he is not to have contact with you and they find that he is he can get wrote up about it... If it's nothing to do with you being "under age" or you being his victim I would just go and get a PO Box and have mail sent there instead of at your home all you have to do with that is give the other names of your "family members" (you have to show ID to get the box now days) that would also be getting mail at that address and you shouldn't have any problem at all with mail...
