I'm going to Harris County Jail - Texas

I'm sick of waiting for my husband to call me, and I haven't got a letter... I bought my plane tickets today, and I'm going to stay with some of his family who live in Houston for 10 days, and hopefully figure out what's going on and if there's anything that can be done to alleviate the situation... Or, if nothing else, just get to visit with my honey, even if it is from behind a glass wall and through a phone....

He is in the 1200 Baker jail...

I read some older posts about how awful visitation is in Harris County jails, but those were maybe a year old, if I remember correctly... Are things any better, specifically at the 1200 jail?

Well, my experience is about a year old also but that's all that I can share with you.

My son was at 1200 Baker last year before going to safp. What an experience. But supposedly it's better than the other county jails. The evening visits are the busiest from what I was told. My son didn't really want me to visit him there but I would go on the weekends very, very early so that it wasn't as crowded so that you could hear one another. Or at least have a better chance of it. I took a little baggie with tissues to wipe the "speaker" because you have to practically be physically on it in order to speak or hear one another. The visits are for twenty minutes. But you can go every day. Sometimes if it wasn't really busy they officers would let an extra five or ten minutes go by before calling him out.

My letter to him usually reached him in approx two days. Once in a while it would take three but I'm here in Houston. He could call me just about whenever he wanted from the pay phone. It was collect calls. But only till/about ten o'clock pm. The food was pretty skimpy and I put enough in his commissary so that he could eat. He did put quite a bit of weight on in county as there is no activity. He got agitated and restless because all they do is sit and wait.

From what I've been told although Baker St isn't the greatest it's better than the others.

When are you flying in? I'm north side of Houston and there is a mini PTO get together March 3rd.

Thanks... I'll be flying in tomorrow and staying with a friend in Spring. I'll be returning to Mississippi on the 28th of this month, however.

He doesn't need to put me on any sort of visitation list, does he? I've heard of smaller county jails doing that, but they ony allowed visitation one night per week. If I do need to be put on a list, I don't know what I'll do since he can't call me!!!

Also, could you describe the speaker things you talk to the inmate through? I thought they were like telephones, but are they something else?

Hi and Welcome to PTO!

My son was at both 700 Jacinito and 1200 Baker Street. Baker was better, I didn't have to wait in such long lines as at Jacinito. There are no visitor's list. You do have to have a valid driver's license. You will be speaking through plexi-glass and it has a round metal piece in the middle with holes. You do have to get very close to speak and have to put your ear up to it to hear. It is not comfortable, but worth it to visit. I hope your visit goes well.
