Default Harris County/City Jail to build a new jail - Texas

My son told me that they were planning on building a new jail. Will hold 2500 to 2700 inmates, I think that is what he said. So where is this on going to be? We have 3 now (4 if you want to count 711 N San Jacinto) not to mention the one they closed down. Anyone else heard this? I was just wondering. He also told me they are planning on building more prisons also. I wonder how many?

My son said it was in the Houston Chronicle. I would assume anywhere from 11-14 to 12-14. If I find the article I will post the link here.

There's a Dec. 25, 2006 article from the Chronicle

"For years Harris County and the city of Houston jails have been under scrutiny from state and federal agencies and courts for substandard conditions. They have been cited as overcrowded, understaffed and offering inadequate medical services." Read the whole article:

Default One in 3 Texas jails fail state inspection

For those who have wondered, this article brings the facts of how Harris county will be able to build a new jail. It will go to commissioners court in November to the public to approve the go ahead. It's sad. It's almost a no win situation. Before annoucing the vote, the report indicates the number of facilities that are old and have faulty electricity. This entails more than likely that people will vote for a new facility based on these statements alone.

Dallas county needs to follow suit. The conditions are terrible including but definately not limited to overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, lack of staff, poor health care of inmates. Its terrible!
