I'm not sure if you mean he was assigned to NJ State Prison [that's its official name] by the Dept. of Corrections b/c typically courts do not sentence someone to a specific prison.
Anyway, NJSP is considered a super maximum security prison whereby the men are locked in their cells most of the time unless they have somewhere to be [i.e., work assignment, religious service, law library]. Visits are considerably more restrictive than the other prisons in NJ. Most of the men are serving long sentences. I'll be glad to answer any questions you have as I have known and continue to know several men who are housed at this prison.

Elaine thank u so much.. All I know is he is in The State Prison in Trenton. I dont have a way to go see him, but I know i can write him anytime I want. I just want to make sure he is safe, and not getting into fights.. I know my brother, and his temper is awful. He has a short fuse, and snaps very easily. Are there alot of fights in that prison?

Try not to worry too much or you will drive yourself nuts!! There are fights in all prisons. Some are just worse than others but no prison is safe at all times. It is prison! And if he has a temper and a short fuse, he needs to try and control it as much as he can and not look for problems. But like I said, try not to worry too much. That is a lesson I learned very early. You can't control what goes on there. Good luck and just say a lot of prayers.

If you go on the NJDOC web page you can get the address for Trenton. Do you have his state or SBI#?

Southern State Correctional Facility is in Delmont, NJ. That is South Jersey and 20 minutes from where I live. Much better than Trenton although, keep in mind it is still prison. It is minimum security and the men live dorm style in trailers. They have more freedom and are not locked down most of the day. My husband was there in 2002 and back then the visits were awesome. However they have gooten a little more strict from what I hear. But certainly better than Trenton. PM me if you have more questions or need directions.

My goodness, you ARE confused! LOL I am MrsPhil, not mrschris. But mrschris does have a lot of info on the prisons. If you go on the NJDOC homepage you can get the address for SSCF.

There are many of us who have never been through this before. Write to him! The one thing that most inmates want is mail! If he doesn't want it, he'll let you know.

I send funny stories (emails that get sent to me), books, letters, a Hallmark card (if you don't know what to write). Just let him know that you're thinking of him and that he's not forgotten.

I recognize the panic, the sadness, the not knowing where to turn and where to find answers to questions you have even figured out to ask yet. We all go through that. So, you're in good company here at PTO.

Good Luck.

You will be ok. We all have these feelings. Like A's Mom said, write him lots of letters and just let him know that some one on the outside is thinking about him.
