I have a very good friend at Corcoran. He has been there for about a year. Anything in particular you wanted to talk about? Did your love one just get moved there?

My son, Chad has been there (Corcoran State) for 3 years. He is on Level 3 because of repeated burglaies. He was recently attacked in his cell by 4 guys when he got back from work one night. He was moved to PC (Protective Custody). I guess it's the only place a guy can be housed when there is a trheat on his life. He also flipped out and, was kept on suicidal watch for about a week. Anyway, he feels like he is being treated like HE did something wrong. He can't have any of his property and no one tells him anything about what is happening in his case. He was told he may be moved to a Prison that has a SN (Sensitive Needs) Section. Does anyone know about this section? He may be going to Salinas Valley, which is another Prison I'd like some info on. And, does anyone know anything about "Points"? Man, I've crammed a lot of questions in here.......any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Donna K

Hi Donna, Salinas Valley is one Prison that has a sensitive needs yard and CSP/LAC is another (Lancaster). Apparently those men who attacked him believe that he has information about him? I dont mean to pry...but they usually put inmates in sensitive needs yard when that inmates knows something about other inmates, and that could jeopardize his life, also for sexual acts, gang drop outs...etc...Also since your son is a level 3, he should have between 30-40 points?...The lower the points an inmate has, the lower the need for security. Points can be added on for serious offenses (max. 8) or taken off for good time and such etc....The point system is weird because despite having low points, he could still be denied Parole. I know I'm throwing a lot out there...anyway, thats what I know. Sorry I couldnt help more because I'm at work. Feel free to PM me anytime!!

Yas

Donna, I am so sorry to hear about your son and I am sure he is feeling really unsure at a point like this. I don’t know anything about a sensitive needs section. This is what I know about points from what James has told me. When you first get classified they give you points based on prior convictions, past behavior, educational background, marital status, prior military service and if you have children. Then during your time your points are adjusted for behavior related issues as they occur or decreased during your annual review, when you have no write-ups etc. My understanding also is that sometimes a person can have level 1 points and still be housed on a 2 yard for other reason such as the nature of their crime. I haven’t been able to locate any reference material to help with this subject, but I will continue to look. I will also ask James when he calls tonight about the points and what the breakdown is between levels. Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you need someone to talk to. Is your son now in Ad Seg? Or the S.H.U.? Can you visit him? I hope that you get the information you are seeking. Linda

Ladies, thanks so much for the info. Chad was raped during that attack and there was a C/O involved. Chad flipped out and was put on suicide watch for a few days. During this time, he was also off his anti-depressant and another medication. I think it is for high-anxity. He also had to go throgh the rape examination and be tested for HIV. He won't know anything for 3 months. Can't they just test the rapist? My Daughter-in-law took me to see him a week later. It's an 8 hour trip and I'm on oxygen so, it's rough for me. But, his eyes really lit up when he saw us. And, the Guard gave us 2 hours instead of the 1 allowed and, even opened the door so we could give him a quick hug. Well, things have calmed down now but, he still feel he is being punished. He's can't have any of his property because that section isn't set up for a TV and too small for anything else. He worked so hard to get these perks. He doesn't want to go out on the yard because it is filled mostly with baby killers and those who have committed crimes against children. So, they have set up a "dog run" so he can get some exercise and out in the open air. Salinas is just an hour from me but, I've heard the mainline is one of the very worse. I wonder how they keep the SN section secluded?
Thanks again for listening and caring.

awwww Donna!! thats horrible! I feel bad for prying, but thank you for sharing. Its sad that he already has to do time, well its kinda like doing time on top of that time, you know? I know its a pain trying to be in the sensitive needs yard but if thats the only way he can be safe, then ok. I hope your son will be ok. And yes, all of us at PTO do care! PM me if you want to talk.

Much Love,
Yasmeen

The SN yard is usually separate from the general population. My man is on a SNY at Pleasant Valley. If he has a sensitive needs on his file, then he won't ever be put with the general population. I know that my man on SNY has welding class, and all of his stuff. When my man first got into protective custody he was in Ad Seg to start with until they formally classified him. When he was in there he couldn't have any of his property. You can always PM too.
