My son, Chad has been there (Corcoran State) for 3 years. He is on Level 3 because of repeated burglaies. He was recently attacked in his cell by 4 guys when he got back from work one night. He was moved to PC (Protective Custody). I guess it's the only place a guy can be housed when there is a trheat on his life. He also flipped out and, was kept on suicidal watch for about a week. Anyway, he feels like he is being treated like HE did something wrong. He can't have any of his property and no one tells him anything about what is happening in his case. He was told he may be moved to a Prison that has a SN (Sensitive Needs) Section. Does anyone know about this section? He may be going to Salinas Valley, which is another Prison I'd like some info on. And, does anyone know anything about "Points"? Man, I've crammed a lot of questions in here.......any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Donna K

Hi Donna, Salinas Valley is one Prison that has a sensitive needs yard and CSP/LAC is another (Lancaster). Apparently those men who attacked him believe that he has information about him? I dont mean to pry...but they usually put inmates in sensitive needs yard when that inmates knows something about other inmates, and that could jeopardize his life, also for sexual acts, gang drop outs...etc...Also since your son is a level 3, he should have between 30-40 points?...The lower the points an inmate has, the lower the need for security. Points can be added on for serious offenses (max. 8) or taken off for good time and such etc....The point system is weird because despite having low points, he could still be denied Parole. I know I'm throwing a lot out there...anyway, thats what I know. Sorry I couldnt help more because I'm at work. Feel free to PM me anytime!!

Donna, I am so sorry to hear about your son and I am sure he is feeling really unsure at a point like this. I donít know anything about a sensitive needs section. This is what I know about points from what James has told me. When you first get classified they give you points based on prior convictions, past behavior, educational background, marital status, prior military service and if you have children. Then during your time your points are adjusted for behavior related issues as they occur or decreased during your annual review, when you have no write-ups etc. My understanding also is that sometimes a person can have level 1 points and still be housed on a 2 yard for other reason such as the nature of their crime. I havenít been able to locate any reference material to help with this subject, but I will continue to look. I will also ask James when he calls tonight about the points and what the breakdown is between levels. Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you need someone to talk to. Is your son now in Ad Seg? Or the S.H.U.? Can you visit him? I hope that you get the information you are seeking. Linda

Ladies, thanks so much for the info. Chad was raped during that attack and there was a C/O involved. Chad flipped out and was put on suicide watch for a few days. During this time, he was also off his anti-depressant and another medication. I think it is for high-anxity. He also had to go throgh the rape examination and be tested for HIV. He won't know anything for 3 months. Can't they just test the rapist? My Daughter-in-law took me to see him a week later. It's an 8 hour trip and I'm on oxygen so, it's rough for me. But, his eyes really lit up when he saw us. And, the Guard gave us 2 hours instead of the 1 allowed and, even opened the door so we could give him a quick hug. Well, things have calmed down now but, he still feel he is being punished. He's can't have any of his property because that section isn't set up for a TV and too small for anything else. He worked so hard to get these perks. He doesn't want to go out on the yard because it is filled mostly with baby killers and those who have committed crimes against children. So, they have set up a "dog run" so he can get some exercise and out in the open air. Salinas is just an hour from me but, I've heard the mainline is one of the very worse. I wonder how they keep the SN section secluded?
Thanks again for listening and caring.

awwww Donna!! thats horrible! I feel bad for prying, but thank you for sharing. Its sad that he already has to do time, well its kinda like doing time on top of that time, you know? I know its a pain trying to be in the sensitive needs yard but if thats the only way he can be safe, then ok. I hope your son will be ok. And yes, all of us at PTO do care! PM me if you want to talk.

Much Love,
Yasmeen

The SN yard is usually separate from the general population. My man is on a SNY at Pleasant Valley. If he has a sensitive needs on his file, then he won't ever be put with the general population. I know that my man on SNY has welding class, and all of his stuff. When my man first got into protective custody he was in Ad Seg to start with until they formally classified him. When he was in there he couldn't have any of his property. You can always PM too.

Thank You, KTC. Actually, Chad is a big guy. 6'3'', almost 200 lbs. He can defend himself but, he is not a fighter. In this case he didn't even get a chance. Probably a good thing because even though the attack was on him, he would have gone in the hole along with his attacker. Up until now, he has been able to avoid these situations and, the only time he has been on Lockdown is when his race went to battle with another. The sad part was he got a sucker punch from a member of his race for not getting into the fight. The hardest part for me is staying strong and upbeat in my letters to him. At least, he is sounding better.
You ladies have all helped me so much on getting through this. Another Thank You!

Hi lil. What you need to do if fill out an application and make sure you tell tem about the felony and what happened. Get this.............I called and asked, "If a person has a felony on their record, can they be approved to see an Inmate?" The lady said, (in a low voice) "Let me tell you something that is NOT TRUE. (then, she raised her voice and said) If they have taken care of the felony, they could be approved. I believe they are told what to say and, this lady decided to just tell me the truth right out. If I were you, I'd fill out an application and see what happens. Your Fiance needs to send one to you. Let me know if I can be of any more help. I have a name and ext. # for just about every Dept. there.

GRAMMYK~ CAN I PLEASE HAVE THOSE NUMBERS AND EXT#'S . MY BROTHER IN LAW IS IN CORCORAN FOR WHAT THE D.A. CALLED IT A GANG RAPE . THE ONLY THING IS THAT MY BROTHER IN LAW AND MY HUSBAND ARE TWINS, THE GIRL SAID AT FIRST MY HUSBAND DID IT AND SHE WAS POSITIVE IT WAS HIM, BUT WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURED MY HUBBY WAS IN COUNTY JAIL, AND NOT ONLY THAT BUT MY BROTHER IN LAW WAS IN CUSTODY AT OUR LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT. MY BROTHER IN LAW TOOK THE COURT HIS DOCUMENTS SHOWING THAT HE WAS IN CUSTODY AT THE TIME BUT HE STILL GOT 3 YEARS FOR THAT CHARGE. I HERD THAT BY BRO IN LAW TRIED TO GO OUT ON MAIN LINE AS MY HUSBAND INSTEAD OF GOING INTO PROTECTIVE CUSTODY AND SOME OF THE OTHER INMATES BEAT HIM UP STABBED HIM 6 TIMES AND THREW HIM OFF THE THIRD TIER. DO YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW IF THIS REALLY HAPPENED? OR DO YOU THINK YOUR SON MIGHT HAVE HERD ABOUT THIS OR IF HE CAN FIND OUT IF ITS TRUE? I KNOW IF I ASK MY BRO IN LAW HE WONT SAY YES OR NO JUST BECAUSE HE DOESNT LIKE TO WORRY US ANYMORE SINCE HIM AND MY HUBBY ARE BOTH IN PRISON. EXCEPT MY HUBBY IS IN SOLANO FOR A TOTALLY DIERENT CHARGE,NOTHING EVEN CLOSE TO HIS BROTHERS.

I'm new here, and i'd appreciate if anyone has any info on Salinas Valley. Are they still locked down. Also, I'll be going up there to see my best friend in Jan. Last month was the 1st time i've gotten to visit him in 17 years. We wrote to each other all through those years, but it was too far to go visit him when he was in Pelican Bay and Susanville. This past summer he got a transfer to Salinas Valley. Thats soooooo much closer. (5 1/2 - 6 hour drive still) But worth every minute. He's got only 9 months left. Yeah, thats my best friend, the boy next door, known him since I was 9, stayed by his side through thick and thin, and plan 2 keep it that way!!

Hi fallingstar,
If you don't get an answer here, call Salinas Valley at 831-678-5500 and ask them.

I am receiving some questions about how to reach Corcoran State and Corcoran SATF. Here is what I have:
Corcoran State 559-992-8800. Warden Office Ext. 5000; Visiting Ext. 5700; Records Ext. 5034; Mail Room Ext. 7759;
Corcoran SATF 559-992-7100. Inmate Info: Ext. 6506; Visiting Ext. 5712 or 5742; Medical Ext. 5414. For any info you need not listed here, just call the prison and then dial 0 when asked for ext.# and the Operator will help you find out what you need. I have many more #'s for State because my son was raped there and most of my calls are to the people involved with the investigation into and the treatment of my son due to his accusations. And, it has been hell because a C/O was involved and, he, my son, has been treated like he was the one who did something wrong. Corcoran State is known for it's C/O abuse and has been under investigation for 3+ years. They are rated as 1 of the 2 top prisons in CA for corruption and are close to being shut down. My son had a bad habit of making an "off the cuff" remark when he would see a C/O demean or assault an Inmate for some petty thing. So, he's not too surprised about what happened to him. He has learned a lot since he was put in "Protective Custody" 4 months ago after reporting the rape. The first 2 , he was in "isolation" and all of his personal property was put in storage because Inmates are not allowed anything but writing materials and books in that area. He is in for 2 counts of Burglary. And, he was a very nice, sensitive 23 year old. He is now a very angry 28 year old who trusts no one. The good thing is that he will be transferred to another prison if he makes it. His case has been dismissed for lack of evidence and he has already been hit with a charge of tearing a t-shirt for which he was charged $22.75 and dropped to the bottom of the transfer list. Well, I'm sorry to have been venting like this here but, I needed to get it out. This is probably why your loved ones don't talk much about that goes on in there and it is probably a good thing. There are chances their letters could be read and they could get into trouble. So, always try to write them encouraging letters and send them jokes and happy thoughts. Try not to complain if they don't write and just keep on writing them anyway. Send them loving, encouraging, and funny cards. Thank you for listening and good luck getting the information you need.
