Thumbs up Pen pal on DR in Florida

Hello and greetings from Germany!

I have a pen pal friend on DR in Florida. Starting to write to him has been nothing but rewarding. It is amazing how fast you can get attached to a person. My only regret is, that I have waited for so long to do this, He has been on DR for over 20 years so far and sure is in need of someone that cares about him. I am so glad I found this side!

Hi & welcome to PTO!
I have a friend on DR and I totally agree just how rewarding it is. I dithered about writing for years - only wished that I'd done it so much sooner now.

i am not making any kind of statements at all. i just wrote, that as far as i knew, america was the only western countrie still having the death penalty. so dont get all offended

kerstin

ps: since when are the ukraine, yogoslavia, uzbekistan, turkmenistan, tadzhikistad, pakistan, japan, bulgaria western countries? Oh, one more thing. bosnia-herzegovina abolished the death sentence in 1997 and poland for exsample doesn't even have it.
it dont matter who is wrong and who is right, important is to stop this kind of punishment all together!

If you wish to have a discussion on retentionist countries (or other global DP issues) please start a new thread in "Capital Punishment Talk".
This thread was started by a member who wants to share her experiences of having a friend on DR Florida.
Thanks.

I have recently started writing to a man on DR in FL also. He is so prompt in answering back. I just got a letter from him at the beginning of the week and he was very down as his chess partner was to be executed. Of course I am sure that you all have read about the execution. I just sent him a letter yesterday. He told me that my letters bring a "ray of sunshine" to his life. I won't stop writing and knowing that I bring a smile to his face is well worth the little bit of time it takes to write to him. He has been there 20 years and gets very few visits. He just had a visit during Thanksgiving and he was so excited about that. Everyone needs a friend and if being a friend is the least we do in life, then we have accomplished so much. Keep writing everyone!!! Show them that there are people that do care!!

I write to the only woman on DR in Florida. She's absolutely my favorite pal - no contest there - and a joy to write to.

You have pen pals on Florida DR??? I've heard on some different times they aren't allowed to have pals and they can really get in trouble if they have pals.

Sabine they can have pen pals but they are not allowed to have advertising out asking for penpals. There is nothing wrong with looking on Floridas website and just write to someone.

I got in touch with my Florida DR pal through a common friend. Schmusi is right, pen pal ads are frowned upon by the Florida DOC but you can write to whichever inmate you like. Inmates have a right to send and receive mail so there isn't really much they can do about it. If you see an ad from a Florida inmate (they do sometimes pop up!) and decide to respond to it, make sure to NEVER mention it in your letters!

There are more states that have the same policy so to be on the safe side I usually don't mention the ad. Sometimes they ask about it and then I answer truthfully, but I don't talk about it without being asked. That way you can't screw up and get them in trouble.

Majority rules??
have you counted the people, who want death penalty, yourself???
How can majority rule in a country where almost every second person is NOT allowed to vote????

I also have penpals in Florida (both on the row and in general population) and just visited at UCI at the end of November. On the row I write to 5 prisoners and in general population to 3, just wish one could be on more than one prisoner's visiting list in FL but I did make arrangements to have two of my other correspondents be in the park at UCI at the same time.

Hi ... I live in England and also write to someone on death row in Florida, and he's been there over 20 years too. I agree, I wish I had written sooner, as I had it on my mind a while before I actually put pen to paper. From my experience, writing to someone on death row has only brought good things into my life, and his, and we both enjoy each others company through our letters. I hope you experience the same.

I have been writing to my 'main' penpal in Florida for over 11 years and have 4 other penpals on the row at UCI. Also have other correspondents including 2 lifers in Florida.

Yes as already mentioned they can have pals, but cannot advertise for them, my pal along with a few others, got confinement a few years ago for having penpal ads up, which are now removed, but there are still the odd ones floating around..if you are interested in writing someone on fl dr, then am sure there are some people in the penpal forums looking for pals
