Default TC Program at VCCW in Goochland

I would be interested in communicating with someone who has (or had) a loved one recently in the Therapeutic Community Program at Virginia Correctional Center for Women in Goochland, VA. My daughter is there and has she told me some tales!!! Anyone else know some stuff?

Sorry, myka, I don't have any info on it, but hopefully someone will be along who can give you some insight. Stay strong!

My daughter is there and she says its a joke. Its all inmates with no real counseling or programs. I thought that it was suppose to be taught by counselors that knew the correct way to help people remain clean once they get out but instead its inmates having group with other inmates.

This is what I am told. They have inmates confronting inmates with no "real" facilitators or counsellors. And the worst part about it, is that this is a DOC approved program. I see nothing "therapuetic" about it.

Its not therapuetic at all ... basically its something to bill the state for more money without really providing any help to the inmates... Virginia really needs to look at its prison program... they have a budget that is unbelievable... jails are overloaded... prisons are overloaded with no real help at all at some of them or waiting lists so long that the sentence is sometimes over before they ever get into any programs at all... so lets see they spend time in jail... and learn how to wash checks and other useful criminal activities and then they except them to come out and not come back???? Yeah right... as felons with no training or nothing to fall back on they cant get a job.... many places will not hire a felon... a felon with a drug charge cant get housing and federal benefits such as insurance or foodstamps in some states... they have bills that they couldnt pay so credit is ruined... court costs have built up and in some cases they will issue a warrent for their arrest for not paying fines... they suspend drivers licenses in Va for the people who dont pay the court costs... so they may come out with no job, no place to live, cant drive legally and may have a warrent for their arrest because of not paying fines... hmmmmm good options there...
Then lets not even talk about the god awful sentencing and the judges with the god complex who just sentence these people with no consideration of alternatives... I wanted to put my daughter in an intense long term drug/acohol rehab... and if I could have gotten it court ordered she would have had to stay and been so much better off once she got out...
Dont get me wrong... yes she was in possession of drugs... yes she failed drug tests while on probation.... yes she broke the law... she was sent to prison on a technical violation... did not commit a new crime... she earned her punishment but 3 years is a little much for being an addict who needed help... she was not selling, transporting for resale, pushing it on others, giving it to kids, or manufactoring... she was using... she was an addict... she needed intense impatient counseling and rehab that could help to identify why she became addicted to begin with and to teach her how to identify her stressors and reasons to be able to avoid becoming a user again... my biggest fear is she will do her 85% and come out and use again because she didnt have the help she needed... or come out with skills that could get in back in big time...
I have lately considered if a class action lawsuit is a good idea to ensure that therapuetic is actually therapuetic... also to test if the assessment they use to determine who goes to jail etc is actually unconstutional... it seem to be biased againts young people and males...

I am hoping they pass some laws to lower time served or bring probation back so she wont be there that long... and hope i can convince her to go to NA or rehab here once she gets out... but shes an adult so I cant make her do anything...

Barb, you are such a wonderful and caring mother. I hope your daughter can break her addiction. If you have anything to say about it, she will!!

I truly feel that DOC wants job security and that is why they don't really do what they should for those incarcerated. Face it, it is a big business that makes a lot of money. Incredibly sad.

Barb, I agree with you 100%. My daughter is an adult as well, and I can only hope and pray that when she comes home (my home) because she lost everything because of her addiction -- her own home, family, job, self-esteem, and almost her life -- she stays home and never gives the state any more of her life. I have the very same frustrations that you do. The justice system stinks and is only in to "warehousing" it's citizens. The prisons are getting more crowded by the day because of these God-awful long sentences -- particularly for those in dire need of counseling and the nonviolent offenders. My daughter went through a TC program in a Regional Jail when she was first locked up. It was very intense and timely. That's when they need it -- when first locked up -- not after being down for 3 years. I will never understand the Commonwealth of Virginia and it's justice system as long as I live! Sorry for rambling, but I can soooo relate to what you say. Take Care!

My girl is now a leader of this so called, TC and she says it's a joke. The sad thing is that it doesn't apear to be optional. Everything "myka" said above is right on!

Default TC Program

What I wrote a couple of years ago is still true and only gets worse. Thank God my daughter survived the whole ordeal and will be coming home a week from Monday. The best advice I can give to you or anyone else who has a loved one there, is to encourage them to work the TC system as best as they can without giving up their souls. Unfortunately, most of the inmates that are in TC need recovery therapy and the TC program is not about that. It is a program that is practically run by the inmates almost 100% - with intervention by CSWs (Clinical Social Workers) who acquired their licensing from God only knows where! I will continue to pray for the inmates and for the family members and friends of the TC program.

Post She could call you

If you get a Video Phone, she could call you through the Video Relay Service.

Default Bad place

I was there as well for 23 months, though I was not in "TC" I was housed there, It is a joke, from the food to the officers "clicking" with inmates...But if you want your loved one to do pretty easy time...This is the place. My kids came to visit a few times...and outside of not telling them about the strip searches they said it looked like a college campus, UNLIKE Fluvanna

My daugther is at goochland now and refused to do the TC program she said it is a joke and for her she was getting nothing out of it. My main issues with goochland is there medical staff and treament, we have been dealing with a medical issue with my daugther. She was sent to uva for treament, the specialist recomment the treament, when she got back to goochland she was informed tha Dr John was changing the medication that was recommed by the specialist. Why send her to uva if your not going to do what is recommed. She is suppose to have blood work and see the specialist once a its going on five weeks now, I was a sure this week by the warden that she was to go last week and it did'nt happen. I at my witts end with goochland and will be contracting DOC and suggestions would be great THANKS

A lot of the places have video links to the doctor instead of taking them to actually see a doctor. Also, it is very possible what the specialist recommended was either unavailable at the facility, or the treatment was too expensive and they substituted something less - just like getting generic instead of the name brand to save money.

If you can't get the answers you want from the warden, go up the chain of command and contact Richmond. I know if is very frustrating when you can't take care of your loved one and it seems nobody cares. Hang in there!
