Fatal incident that occurred at correctional complex comes under FBI scrutiny

By TATIANA PROPHET/Staff Writer

VICTORVILLLE — An inmate at the Victorville Federal Correctional Complex has died after a clash with another inmate, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is working to determine whether a crime occurred.

Tony Richard Padilla, 44, died Saturday at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center after being transported there by Mercy Air. He had been involved in an "altercation" with another inmate, according to the San Bernardino County coroner.

Laura I. Miller, spokeswoman for the FBI, said the bureau is investigating the case because the correctional complex is under federal jurisdiction.

"We are investigating the incident involving Mr. Padilla," Miller said, declining to comment any further. "It's being investigated as a possible crime at a federal penitentiary."

The county Coroner's office plans to do an autopsy later in the week.

The spokesman for the Victorville prison was attending a training session and was unavailable for comment Monday.

Further information on Padilla's sentence, or the nature of the crime for which he was serving time, was unavailable Monday. Padilla's release date was Oct. 1, 2016.

The three prisons that make up the Victorville Correctional Complex house 2,671 inmates, and they are part of a network of 187 federal prisons around the country. Two are medium-security prisons housing males, with one satellite camp housing minimum-security female inmates. A third facility, the U.S. Penitentiary, is a high-security prison.

There were 191,342 inmates in the federal prison system as of July 29.
