Default why are crayon/colored pencils a nono?

I'm about to parade my ignorance again, but why are crayon and colored pencil drawings not allowed? I heard something like drugs can be carried in them?

What state/facility are you speaking of? Some states will allow them others won't - for various reasons, but yes, folks will try to come up with all kinds of scemes to smuggle stuff in, making it hard for the rest of us who obey the laws/rules!

They can buy colored pencils at Commissary but for the reason stated above, some prisons may not let such drawings come in. Same with things your kids may draw with magic markers. Contraband! And that's thanks to those who have tried to get drugs in. Then new rules are made which affect all the rest of us!

The way around it, so you can share such art without violationg the rules is to scan and print the original or take it to a copyshop and have a colour copy made and send the print.

I've been scanning the drawings and sending him printouts, but even so, I've had several letters get turned back because of "crayon drawing". I've taken to writing PHOTOCOPY or PRINTOUT across it which has seemed to help, although it's not as aesthetic, at least he gets to see it.

that's seriously rediculous. i mean, i know it's not so much the d.o.c's fault as it is whoever ruined it for the rest of us' fault, but still how far are they going to go?!? don't they have methods of detecting whether drugs are present without having to restrict virtually everything?!?

i think mississippi (where my guy is) just banned stickers and that was annoying to me b/c i loved finding cute stickers to decorate with. if they ban colored pencils, i'm gonna be pissed!!

maybe if we want to add some color to our loved one's lives through the mail we'll have to resort to those pre-printed colorful envelopes. we'll find a way to get around their stupid "policies"

I know that when they had packages from home at some places that my brother was I could send him colored pencils and I kind of miss that. Thankfully where my husband is they take so long to get the mail to him that they don't trip off my daughters artwork. She has even sent him in stuff with that poster paint all over it. But since I can't use stickers I just look for cute little graphics on lince and insert them into word print it out and write on that. I also use different fonts and colors and I alwaysmake him cute labels and matching envelopes and they are always printed on colored envelopes so that he sees his mail from down the teir.

I have sent in drawings to my husband that were colored by my kids, with crayons & colored pencils. So far so good, nothing has been returned!
