global tel link is a total rip off! the two phone numbers that you were given were correct. I hope that they helped you set up and account successfully. The customer sevice sucks and they rip you off with the taxes. I have to use them to get calls from my mans facility and believe me I hate them and thats a strong word!

Thumbs down Complete rip Off

Globel Tel Links uses the fact that they are the only source capable of being able to help you accept collect calls from an institution to rip you off. The customer service is bullshit. I had 16.00 in credits, my husband called we talked, he called back phone was static we hung up he called right back and the phone says I dont have enough credit to accept a call. I had to add another 25.00 to my phone. I called to talk to the operator and of course you cant get through. Three hours later a rude condescending "women" (cheap help)for lack of a better term calls me back to tell me that I must have my phone calls mixed up. When I asked to speak to a supervisor I was put on hold for 15 minutes and then told by an automated voice to tell me that they dont have any one to come to the phone right now. Unfortunately they use the need for you to talk to your loved ones to suck money out of you. Unfortunately for them those of us that are not incarcerated that are business owners and public freindly will use whatever access to the internet media etc to bankrupt them. Hopefully soemone will file a class action against them I certainly will get involved. I also encourage any of you to do the same if it happens. If you absolutely dont have to use them DON'T! By the way every call you make with them is recored and kept. They can pull any call any time and can and do listen to them. So becareful out there. Also be carefull your not taken advantage of as well as many of us have been.

Exclamation Global Tel-Link double charging billing fee...

I am willing to file a class action lawsuit against global tel-link. I am being double charged the monthly billing fee. Once by global tel-link, and once by my phone carrier. I cannot for the life of me get anyone to help fix this problem. I can't imagine how many people this is happening to. A lawyers dream. Anyone on board with me?

I have just sent an email to: Belt Law Firm, P.C.
Lakeshore Park Plaza, Suite 208
2204 Lakeshore Drive
Birmingham, Alabama 35209-6739

Please look them up online and send them a note as well. They need to know that there will be enough people on board to make this lawsuit worth while. I chose this law firm because it is in Alabama and Global Tel-Link is also based in Alabama. Come on everyone... let's stand up for ourselves. Also, be sure to check your phone records against your regular phone bill to see if you are also being charged double service fees.

Thanks,
Kari

Default Sick and Tired

I've been dealing with Global for 3 years now. I'm having problems when I send a check to them and they post it to someone elses phone. Now I have to fax them over a copy of the cashed check in order for it to be applied to my account. They are totally stupid. Why can't they find the account that they posted it to without me having to go to my bank. Are there any other phone companys out there to deal with or did they take over.

When you set up the account did you give them the area code of where your man is in prison, because that will lower the amount of money that they charge you per call. I'm assuming you have a prepaid phone?

I just changed my number to an exchange closer to the facility that my guy is in. I already had the same area code, but I had the exchange number changed to a number that was the closest number to the facility that they had. The cost of the call dropped from $4.25 per call to about $2.25 per call. Also, instead of using my card and adding money to the account over the phone, I am going to start mailing it in to save the $9.50 service charge. They charge you $9.50 for every $50. that you place on your account! That is why they put a $50 limit on what you can put on your account, so they can charge this service charge over and over again! When you send a check through the mail, there is no limit on the amount that you can put on your account. I figure it's better to add onto the account once a month or so by check and then there aren't any service fees involved. The address to place funds on your account through the mail to GTL is: GTL, Dept. 1722, Denver, Co, 80291-1722 and make sure that you put in the memo: For phone # ***-***-****.

I have had so many problems with GTL also. I do know you can send them a fax requesting your bill, this should give you all calls & charges on it. Try to contact this lady if not her, the next time you talk to anyone get their fax number & request the info. Margaret Phillips 1-251-375-8026. I am in on any lawsuit you get going just let me know!!!!

Does the state matter? One thing though on prepay accounts you don't get billed as far as I know.
I am onboard if they are willing to deal with any complaint issues in any state. Their attitude and customer service is the complete oposite what their site states.

The system they have in place is a scam and after they block your phone for exceeding the 100.00 limit in one month if it happens again they rope you into the prepay system, which they 9.50 of your money you put on your prepay account, in my case they placed the 100.00 credit limit on my county jail system, right, like I was born yesterday. The county jails can limit the amount just by limiting access to phones.

check my story out in the thread titled "I hate Global Tel Link". Sorry, can't post link since I don't have enough posts.

i am currently expeirencing a problem as well.

i'm not sure it's with GTL, as much as it is with AT&T.

i got my phone service switched, AT&T messed up and disconnected collect calls. i waited 7 days for it to be fixed. it is. now they are telling me it's going to take 48 hours for GTL to see i can accept collect calls again.

i'm trying to make sure that they realize it. does anyone know if i'll have to call them personally? ask them to look up my account, or if when he dials my number, it'll automatically realize it after the 48 hour time line. do they need to reset something??

ayy..i made such a big deal about him finally being able to call me just to not be able to now!!!

Case Challenges Verizon/MCI Monopoly On Inmate Phone Calls

NEW YORK---This week, the Center for Constitutional Rights filed its appeal brief in Walton v. NYSDOCS with the New York State Court of Appeals, the state's highest court. The lawsuit seeks an order prohibiting the State and Verizon/MCI from charging exorbitant rates to the family members of prisoners to finance a 57.5% kickback to the State.

Verizon/MCI is currently charging these family members a 630% markup over consumer rates to receive a collect call from their loved ones, the only method of calling from a Department of Correctional Services institution.

"It is long past time for the New York Courts to consider this case," stated Rachael Meeropol, a Center for Constitutional Rights attorney representing plaintiffs in the case. "For over a decade, family members of prisoners who live hours away from where their loved ones are incarcerated have had to spend hundreds of dollars a month keeping in touch by phone. Hopefully the court will do the right thing, and finally put an end to this unjust contract."

The rates under this contract charge family members 630% more than typical consumer rates to talk with loved ones in New York State Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) prisons. New York State gets a 57.5% kickback on the phone company's profits.

The Court of Appeals granted leave to appeal earlier this year, after CCR drew attention to the way in which the lower court's dismissal of the case "wrongly insulated the illegal actions of the NYSDOCS and Verizon/MCI from judicial review for years to come." CCR sought review by the highest court, which is a matter of discretion, based on the fact that the plaintiffs "underlying claims - that their Constitutional right to due process, freedom of speech and association, and equal protection under the law are violated by a discriminatory and burdensome tax levied by the NYSDOCS each month without legislative authorization - are timely, are of statewide importance, and merit review by this Court."

CCR also welcomed a friend of the Court brief by the Legal Aid Society, an organization that provides free legal services to indigent people and litigates to protect prisoners' rights. The Legal Aid Society also urged the Court of Appeals to review the case, based on the "important issues raised and their statewide significance."

"I can't afford to talk to my son now under Verizon's rates," said Ivey Walton, a plaintiff in the case. "No one should be cut off from their family, just so the State can make a profit. I'm praying the courts will correct this injustice and help keep our families together."

A legislative solution to this phone contract is the Family Connections Bill (S.5299-D) which moved from the N.Y. State Senate Committee on Crime Victims, Corrections, and Crime to the Senate Finance Committee in early January, but did not move out of committee and was not considered by the Senate before the close of the legislative session in June.

The Assembly version of the bill (A.7231-D) passed before session's end.

For more information about the issue, see telephonejustice dot org
For someone incarcerated in a New York State prison to call collect to a loved one, Verizon/MCI currently charges $3 to initiate the call and 16˘ per minute.

To provide phone service for the general public, Verizon/MCI advertises rates as low as $5 per month for service and 5˘ per minute.

The average prison phone call is billed at 19 minutes, costing just over $6-a mark up of more than 630%!

There are 3,335 collect call-only telephones available to the 66,000 inmates in 71 New York State Department of Correctional Services facilities.

Approximately 500,000 calls from prisons are now completed each month, totaling more than 9.5 million minutes.

In fiscal year 2002, New York State prisoners made 7 million collect calls totaling more than 124 million minutes, generating gross revenues exceeding $39 million. New York State collects 57.5% of this gross, $22.4 million in FY2002. NYS has collected over $175 million from this contract since its inception in 1996.

A landmark study from the California Department of Corrections and numerous follow-up studies have showed that men and women in prison who maintain relationships with their loved ones are more likely to complete their parole without incident.

More than 80% of the state's prisoners come from poor New York City neighborhoods, according to the Albany based Center for Law and Justice. With two-thirds of the prison facilities located three hours or more from New York City, telephone calls become a critical means for families to keep in touch.

Seventy-five percent of New York State prisoners have no high school diploma, according to the Correctional Association, making letter writing and other written communication more difficult.

Those incarcerated in federal prisons can use an 800 toll-free number which typically costs 7˘ per minute.

The correctional phone market is worth well over $1 billion a year, according to the Florida Prisoners Legal Aid Organization. 9-21-06

Hello

I'm in Australia, and I can't get through to GTL at all to even set up an account. I've tried doing it online (it says my phone number is 'too long' but I have to include my country and area codes?!), and on the phone (I can't get through to them)... It's driving me crazy! I want to talk to my PP and at the moment, he has to keep paying for the calls... Does anyone have any other suggestions how I can get through to them from Australia??

PS. Another crazy GTL thing? It costs my PP (He's in MCI Concord) over $2 a minute to calls in the US, and to me, in another COUNTRY, it only costs 77cents!! Not that I'm complaining it's so cheap to call me (lol) but thats crazy...

The user Thingstosay posted a fax number and name (for help with bills), maybe you can fax her and ask how to set it up. The name and fax number she listed is Margaret Phillips 1-251-375-8026.

Hope you get it worked out, I don't know what I would do without the calls.

Global sucks! I put money on my old phone when my husband got locked up because they said there was no money on there...after I added $25 (less the service charge), I "magically" had $29.85. How does that work considering they take $4.75 as a service fee...Then, I accepted 1 call, it hung up and it took them a month to give me my money back because they wouldn't transfer the money to my new phone. Customer service is rude and threatens to block your future calls if you dispute charges with them. Never get responses when you use the automated call back system. Can't get records of calls (prepaid account). Have never been able to talk to a supervisor...was told a month ago 3 days...we are now on day 34. Hangs up in under a minute and GTL won't refund your money even the facility says they are supposed to AND the problem is on their end.
