Default Fire Camps in CA

Prisoners assigned to the Conservation Camp Program are carefully screened. Only minimum-security prisoners – those without a violent background – can participate. Prisoners with "two strikes" on their record also are not eligible. Many times they have been convicted of either theft of drug possession.

- This is an article I found on the CDF website regarding fire camps.

CDF CONSERVATION CAMP PROGRAM

CDF is currently authorized to operate 39 Conservation Camps statewide that house nearly 4,000 inmates and wards. These camps are operated in conjunction with the California Department of Corrections (CDC) and the California Youth Authority (CYA). Through these cooperative efforts CDF is authorized to operate 196 fire crews year round. These crews, also referred to as hand crews, are available to respond to all types of emergencies including wildfires, floods, search and rescue. Fire crews perform several million hours of emergency response each year and more on work projects.

The crews are completely mobile throughout the state and are strategically located in areas that are most likely to need their assistance. They are carefully screened by custodial agencies for their suitability for the program, including physical, emotional, and intellectual aptitudes, as well as a lack of arson in their records. Potential crew members are evaluated again during physical fitness training by the custodial agency and yet again during their basic training by CDF. Fire Crew Firefighter Basic Training consists of a week of classroom training and a week of field training and covers wildland fire safety and attack, hand tool use, teamwork, and crew expectations. Once assigned to a fire crew, a minimum of four hours-per-week of advanced training is provided to each fire crew firefighter, with some members progressing to more responsible positions on the crew. All CDF fire crews are tested each spring during rigorous Fire Crew Preparedness Exercises.

On fires, building "freeways" with chain saws and hand tools through whatever vegetation happens to be in the line of fire is normal crew routine. However, direct attack, where the crew’s efforts are applied directly to the flaming front of the fire, is the tactic of choice when the distance between the wildfire, and life and property grows smaller. You will also see these crews ahead of the fire setting up to protect structures. CDF fire crews are available year-round; consequently, they have become California’s storm troopers, logging some 426,090 hours of flood fighting in January of 1997 alone. All of California’s major disasters over the last few years have seen the assistance of the fire crews in either a labor intensive effort to contain and mitigate the situation, such as the fires, heavy snows, search and rescue operations, earthquakes and floods, or in more of a support role, such as staffing a mobile kitchen unit during the Los Angeles riots.

A typical conservation camp will be located within a few miles of a small population center. It will have a civil service staff of at least 24 employees, between CDF and the cooperating agency, and will field five fire crews. The budget for a typical camp, including both agencies’ payroll and operating costs, is about $2.35 million. Many of the goods and services required for operation of the conservation camp will be purchased from local vendors, and it is common for staff to be active, involved members of the local community.

Default California Fire Camp Locations

Good morning ladies,
I have a few questions about the fire camps that our men go too from CCC. First of all where are they all? Is there a way to request one that is close to home? How long does it usually take to get to fire camp once at
CCC? What are the chances they will go to a fire camp farther away? What can I do to try and get him closer to home?
Any information you all can help me with would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Barb

I'm moving this to the General forum in hopes that more people familiar with the various camps will see it.

The NORTHERN CAMPS are trained in Susanville. The map above is NORTHERN CAMPS ONLY.
Growlersburg is now a Northern Camp..

Southern Camps are trained in Jamestown.

You cannot get a transfer from a Northern Camp to a Southern Camp, and vice versa.

The fire camp we are talking about is run by CDCR so I think it is only for state offenders.... Sorry.

Ben Lomand was taken over by CDCR and is operated by CCC staff. The takeover happened in 2006 the same time Washington Ridge became a CDCR camp.

Anyone else having mail returned from CC#36 33015 Bautista Rd?

All of a sudden my mail is being returned by the post office (not the prison).

I went to the posts office website and to the shipping kiosk at the post office and both say 33015 Bautista Rd in Hemet does not exist.

How does this address suddenly disappear?

FYI, Growlerburg is a northern camp, run by CCC as of 2006.

Default Firecamp Dilemma...can Anyone Help?????

MY HUSBAND IS CURRENTLY IN WASCO STATE PRISON RECEPTION CENTER. HIS COUNSELOR HAS JUST RECENTLY CONTACTED HIM....BUT HE DIDN'T COME TO SEE HIM...HE CALLED & HAD THE C/O PUT HIM ON THE PHONE!!! HE DIDN'T REALLY LISTEN TO WHAT MY HUSBAND HAD TO SAY OR ANYTHING....HE TOLD HIM THAT HE ONLY HAS 4 POINTS ...MY HUSBAND IS IN THE SAP PROGRAM & HAS AN ENDORCEMENT FOR JAMESTOWN FIRECAMP FROM THAT PROGRAM. HOWEVER, THE COUNSELOR TOLD HIM THAT HE WOULD EITHER GO TO CALIFRONIA MEN'S COLONY OR TEHACHIPE. WHEN MY HUSBAND TOLD HIM ABOUT THE FIRECAMP ENDORCEMENT...HE REPLIED THAT HE CAN LET THE COUNSELOR KNOW WHEN HE GETS WHERE HE IS GOING??? HE HAS BEEN TO FIRECAMP BEFORE...HE HAS 2 YRS TO DO...& HE IS A LEVEL 1...IF HE GOES TO ONE OF THESE PRISONS RECOMMENDED BY THE COUNSELOR CAN HE STILL BE SENT TO A FIRECAMP??? DOES ANY ONE OF THESE PRISONS HAVE A FIRECAMP??? HELP ME I'M LOST.
