Addiction: A 'Meth Prison' Movement

Newsweek

April 24, 2006 issue - As the methamphetamine epidemic continues to ravage the country, some states are responding with a new innovation: "meth prisons" dedicated exclusively to inmates addicted to the drug. The Montana Department of Corrections just approved construction of two of them—an 80-inmate unit for men and a 40-inmate unit for women. Illinois, which already has a two-year-old drug prison that handles a variety of addictions, plans to open two meth-specific facilities by July 2007; each one will house 200 male inmates.

Default I agree....

That sounds more like a solution that we need! Right now we just keep locking people up but the problem is still there!

Something like this is much needed as long as treatment is intense along with the incarceration time. These rehab facilities that keep an addict for 30 days and cut them loose are all fine and good as long as the person applies what they have learned in the facility. Many go just to jump through the hoops that the system has put in front of them, they don't go because they want to get well.
I guess waiting and seeing what these facilities have to offer and how their stats look will tell us if it's a good thing or not. JMO

They should call them Healing Centers or something instead of prisons, yet keep it kinda strict and definitely a couple of years, no 30 day nonsense. I have seen meth addicts on TV documentaries say "Thak God I went to jail, I would have been dead for sure." That to me is a powerful statement of how hellish this addiction must be and how easy to get caught up in.
I am glad they are not just limiting it to drug busts but recognizing that that is the REAL underlying problem in other cases too.

I know from personal experience that 30 days is not long enough for someone who is addicted to 'METH'! I have been there and it is a hard addiction to overcome. The main thing is if you don't want to help yourself then it really doesn't matter where your locked up at because your just gonna do it again!

Well my daughter's boyfriend gets out tomorrow. I am sick, knowing what is coming. I have prayed that he will change but I just don't see it from phone conversations.

Patti, I am sending lots of positive waves to you...If he wants to change he will seek out more rehab, since he was only gone for 30 days..
I pray he does make a change, for you and your daughter and baby's sake! Remember, just do not enable him at all, nor allow your daughter to either. He will need to get a job immediately! However keep a watch out, the first thing he will want to do is find some of the drug...He is an addict and this is what addicts do. Sending prayers your way!!

Holly, he got back last night. I figured the way he was talking that he wasn't going to be on the bus when it came in. Thank God my daughter was there to get him or it would have been ugly. I am sure that he thought I would tell her that he wasn't coming. Well that's what he said, and I am glad she went to see for herself anyway.

He and I got into it on the phone. I was trying to fix a bottle and he kept calling. Well last night he had to come and see his DOG. Well he didn't step foot on the property, he stayed out in the street by the car. I told daughter last night that they need to figure something out with the dog. He has got to go, I can't afford the ones that are here and theirs. Today I woke up extremely anxious, headache and the whole nine yards. They are staying with her dad for awhile. With his attitude on the phone he knew I wasn't giving in to his temper tantrum. I guess take a deep breath and hope for the best for my daughter and grandson. I give him 2 weeks MAX and I mean at the VERY MOST before he blows up and takes off. Should that happen, he won't be welcome back at her dad's house I am sure. Time will tell.
