New to PTO, and heading to Harris County Jail - Texas

Hey all. I'm glad I found a resource such as this, with so many experienced persons willing to share their knowledge. January of 2005 I was arrested for DWI, and received 180 days probated to 1 year. Fast forward to this last January, of 2006. I ended up with a few probation violations, and the judge motioned to revoke my probation, which means they issued a warrant. I turned myself in, and spent a day in Harris County. As a result, they've amended my probation by extending it for 6 months as well as giving me 5 days of jail time in Harris County. There's a slight chance I can get the days waived if I essentially satisfy All the conditions my probation before the 24th of this month. If I don't get them waived, I check in on the 27th of this month. I'm wondering if anyone can give me any tips on how to make my stay the easiest it can be. I'd been diagnosed about 2 years ago with mild schizophrenia and anxiety, but after taking my meds for awhile and really only feeling tired and useless because of them, I discussed it with my doc and went off of them. Would it be advisable for me to call doc back up, get re-examined and diagnosed, and present that documentation when I turn myself in for my time? Will that land me any advantages when it comes to where I'll be located, whether I'll be able to receive medication, and things like that? Also, any general tips on making it through Harris County? From what I've read, most of the people on these forums have loved ones in for considerable amounts of time, and might not be too concerned with someone only doing 5 days in a county jail. I'm asking for help because I didn't feel safe at all when I spent my first day in county for probation violations. I'm 22, small build, and white, and I was threatened often, by guards and inmates of all races. Any help on snagging semi-isolation while inside would be greatly appreciated.

You should be ok as long as you take your medical paper work with you when you go in. My son has been in Harris County 5 months with no problems. try to stay to yourself if possible. My son runs into a few good people in Harris county and seems to get along with almost everyone who enters his cell block. If anyone wants to start anything with you just tell them you are their serving your time and they will back off. The guards try to act tough but in my views from what I have seen that is all it is an act. Good Luck to you! Jeannie

Hello and welcome to PTO. If you want to take your meds while in the county then take paperwork with you to prove you are not faking. I am not sure if that will help you with where they put you. I know when my son turned himself in he wore 2 white t-shirts, 2 pairs of socks and not sure about boxers, don't forget it all needs to be white. If you turn yourself in on a Friday, it will take you a while to get on the floor. You might get lucky and get sent to 1301 Baker, that is where my son got put when he had to do 20 days. Yes keep to yourself as much as possible. Good luck!

Do you have any family members that are police officers? if so, they will put you in a 'safe' tank. But, otherwise your options are to be overcrowded on the regular unit or deal with TRUE lunatics in the psych ward. Husband says that overcrowding has got to be better. He did 120 days in Harris County in 1992 and 45 days in 2003 before moving to TDC. And it's only 5 days. Stay in your bunk with your back against the wall..hehehehehe. hope for a top bunk. Just kidding, it's not that bad. Just keep to yourself and your 5 days will go by fine.

LOL Dawna thats soo mean! Honestly take your papers and kinda keep to yourself when it comes to certain situatons that arise, I am beyond glad that I have never done time in Harris County!

Well... I had a dwi revoked last year and was scared as what you are now. I had to spend 12 days in that hell hole, the reason I am hear is because of that DWI and me being stupid(owner of a company that was "smarter than a po, well she showed me after a comment about her pay and waiting 15 minutes on someone that maed a lot more $'s that what she did"). I kept my head down and just read some books after I got to my bunk(36 hours into the ordeal or so) but after I found the books, I just stayed up there and only came down to order from the store and to get the crummy meals. It made me look different at the prison system, and not want to go back. I will say this, it isn't as bad as what 99.99% of the people here say, yes you are locked up, but it is better than a lot of places in this world.

It is better than alot of places in the world but for the United States, the prison/jail system shouldn't be the way it is, overcrowded with crap meals, yes you are doing time but you still have a right to eat and to have a safe place to sleep!

I think thats what bugs me the most is that its overcrowded and the food is crap!

I have a reply to the about if you have a family member that is a "Police Officer" and the "safe tank" in Harris County. Its actualy
'protective custody" and its sucks in the Harris County women unit. That were they put the people that are off are have some problems as well as family to lawenforcement. So even thew its protcted its not as civil. My wife just got transferd out and i talk to her daily. Thats what she told me.
