Anyone Familiar with Seraquel

The doctor is switching my daughter to Seraquel(sp?) from her Risperdol. Anyone familiar with this.
The Risperdol, like the Lamictal made her excessively hungry. I found something online that this is supposed to not make her hungry. Input anyone????

OK, your post is kinda old, so I'm not sure if you're checking in still. And I'm not going to be much help, either. But I did take it, for a short while. Oddly, my doctor and I were talking about it just last week. It's an anit-psychotic and I forget what else he said, something like it keeps you from caring about a lot of stressful things. I'll say! I was walking through a Home Depot parking lot and fell over - litterally fell OVER a shopping cart. Guy came running. I just got up and walked away. "I don't know how that happened," I said through my daze. Hmmm. Maybe driving isn't such a good idea, either!

Seraquel wasn't for me. But now I'm on Lamictal and LOVE it - owe my life to it, maybe. Although I'm waaaay more laid back than I used to be, or than I want to be. But it gave me NO side effects, where as ALL the other similar meds I took made me psychotic to one degree or another.

Just start with low doses, and keep an eye on her, and have her doc monitor her.

This is what I found when I looked it up.
This medication is used for the treatment of certain mental conditions (e.g., schizophrenia, the manic stage of bipolar disorder.

SIDE EFFECTS:
Constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, stomach pain or upset, weight gain or dry mouth may occur. If these persist or worsen, notify your doctor.
To relieve dry mouth and protect teeth and gums, you may suck on sugarless candy or use a saliva substitute or ice chips.
Report promptly: fainting, unusually fast or irregular heartbeat.
Unlikely but report promptly: skin rash, itching, trouble breathing.
Very unlikely but report promptly: fever, persistent sore throat, muscle stiffness, confusion, sweating, uncontrolled muscle movements (e.g., tongue or facial muscles), one-sided muscle weakness, cold sensitivity, trouble urinating, black stools, unusual moods.
This drug may infrequently make your blood sugar level rise, therefore causing or worsening diabetes. This high blood sugar can rarely cause serious (sometimes fatal) conditions such as diabetic coma. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms of high blood sugar, such as unusual increased thirst and urination, or vision changes. If you already have diabetes, be sure to check your blood sugar level regularly. This drug may also cause significant weight gain and a rise in your blood cholesterol (or triglyceride) levels. These effects, along with diabetes, may increase your risk for developing heart disease. Discuss the risks and benefits of treatment with your doctor.

I have took serequel before it never made me hungry but it made me really tired,and if you take too many like 2 or 3 of them you can almost die,i took 2 of them and it took my gf 3 hours to wake me up I wouldnt wake up and when you take them then you wake up your still tired its like u didnt get any sleep,if you ask me I would try to find something else cause seraquel really suck,Justin

Finding the best physc meds and dosages can be difficult. It took me an 100+ day inpatient stay, 7 physc meds and 2 years on the outside trying to get a workable combination of meds with the least amount of side effects. The side effects are the hard part. A lot of the meds cause drowsiness, so I take all of mine at night. That seems to work best for me. It also helped with the dizziness and drowsiness. The constipation can be very unpleasant! I am now down to three and hopefully be able to discontinue 2 of them sometime this year.

She is on 25mg a day and takes it after dinner at night and goes to bed within1-2 hours and she says it does make her tired. The doctor actually wanted her to go up to 50mg for two weeks, then 75mg then eventually 100. In the past this doctor tends to wants to put the meds to a much stronger dose then needed, she is doing ok on the 25mg in the evenings and I am going to tell the doctor I'd like to keep her at that. She does get tired in the morning if she takes it too late.

It made me gain weight but as far as hunger, that wasn't a problem. I'm surprised Lamictal made her hungry. It does the opposite for me.

I am diabetic and currently taking seroquel for bipolar disorder. I am also a recovering meth user. I began using Seroquel about 3 weeks ago and it enabled me to put back on all the weight my addiction took off. However if the weight gain continues I plan on talking to my doctor about switching meds. Different strokes for different folks!

All anti psychotics have the effect of weight gain, either through water retention, or, more commonly, increased appetite.

The change from Risperedone to Seroquel is a step downward in the strength eleminitating psychosis. However, It may be better for the patients, as it has less side effects and is more easily tolerated.

I am unable to recieve private messages, as my stupid pop up blocker keeps me from doing so. But if you have any more questions on ANY medications dealing with the mentally ill, by all means respond to my threads.
Increased appetite and weight gain is a small price to pay for regaining the personality of your loved one. A SMALL PRICE! My older brother went from 190 to 300+ lbs, but he is safer now, psychiatrically.

Dont worry about the weight gain. You are lucky to be alive after the methamphetamine use. May I suggest an STD test?? It is an epidemic, and if it applies, you must get one. Seroquel has many side effects, but its active ingredient (quitepamine fumarate) will keep you from the horrors of a manic episode, and will equal out your mood. This is chris, I was unable to read your private message, my computer will not allow me. 25 mg is the smallest dose possible. If the patient responds, it will be wonderful!
My brother is on 600 mg Seroquel plus other meds, including risperidone and Depakote. That's a high dose. Make sure the meds are taken EVERY DAY and at the SAME TIME. Good luck you you nightbird. Does loxapine make you gain weight. I take Lamictal, Loxapine and hydroxyzine and I'm gaining weight. Which one is the culprit?

My son has been on seroquel for about 3 years and take 800 mgs a day . And yes he gained weight on it. We are slowly decreasing it and have added Abilify medicines work different ways in different people he has taken it so long it doesnt make him tired at all. With mental illness its a good and bad and lots of med adjustments.

It will be the same thing with the Risperdol my son is on both Seraquel and Risperdol and he is always trying to eat and i know he is not hungry. He is really not eating he is more like grazying a little bit here and a little bit there.
