Default How Much Extra Postage Is Required? (on a card that says it needs extra)

Ok this is a dumb question but when you get a card in a bigger envelope than usual and it says extra postage required, how much extra postage is required?

That's not a dumb question, I always but another extra stamp just in case, but if you can't spare it, I would go to the post office and have them weight it for ya...
When you find out, can you let me know

The extra charge for an oversized envelope is 13 cents. However, if you're talking about one of those giant cards or something heavier than an ounce, you do need to take it to be weighed.

When stamps were 37 cents, it would have been an additional 23 cents (to pay for the extra ounce).

Now that stamps are 39 cents, it would be 26 cents for the extra ounce.

Whiskey,

When you go to the USPS website, you can calculate it yourself. There is indeed an extra charge for a bigger envelope and it had nothing to do with weight whatsoever. Like, I tried a 1 ounce letter with a big envelope and came up with 52 cents. So I guess it would even be more, if it weighs more than one ounce.

They also ask you to give information about the zipcodes (where to and from), so maybe the 52 cents is not even accurate for your situation. Just check out the website...or go to the post office if you want to be sure.

The size of the envelope makes a difference in price also. I've mailed cards that weigh no more than a regular card, but they are 4" squared cards and they cost extra too.

Yah it's the size of the card that I'm wondering now. Fresh Ink Hallmark cards, the if you don't use the other envelopes they provide says it require extra postage. This card is bigger, not that big through, I'll just keep using two stamps...thanks guys!

I just went to my job's mailroom and had them weigh a card that said needs extra postage on it. It was .87. You should definitely have it weighed first.

It's not because of the weight. I have a mail scale at home, it's the dimensions of the envelope

You should go to the website. I am sure they have what the size and price is for your card.

It is wierd how square cards in square envelopes cost more to mail even if they weigh the same as regular cards.

It's because non-standard mail pieces often won't go through automated equipment properly and have to be processed by hand, which is more expensive for the P.O.
