Gang Validation Manual _
Charles Carbone from California Prison Focus [CPF] stated_ the Handleman Family Fund paid for publishing of the manual Steve Castillo (SHU Inmate) wrote to help prisoners challenge the gang validation procedure. Charles asked the CDC about the legality and appropriateness of CPF mailing the manual, and they object to CPF doing a mass mailing of it. As of now the manual will not go out to prisoners, but Charles and other CPF members are looking to changing that situation.

SHU Investigation Pending
Sen. Gloria Romero, the Chair of the Legislative Oversight Committee for the CDC, contacted Charles and CPF to talk about gang validation issues and the SHU in light of current budget crisis. She wants to hold hearings about the SHU at the end of Summer/early Fall, with attention to problems with gang validation. She went to the PBSP SHU yesterday, met with Donny and Steve and other inmates, and she says she is determined to investigate SHU issues.

Pelican Bay (General Population) Lockdowns _
A visitor has shared with CPF that erroneous labelling of gang affiliation is leading to trouble on the yard, and the resulting tensions gives the CDC a rationale for further lockdowns. In the Aaron Escalera lawsuit, the CDC was recently ordered by the Court to release some people on lockdown at PBSP because they've been locked down for an unreasonably long time. CPF will investigate questionable policies and practices at PBSP.

CPF & The African-American Historical Society are co-sponsoring a

CORCORAN: Medical Center or Death Camp?

The event will be Wed., June 18, 7 P.M. at the African American Cultural Complex at 762 Fulton Street in San Francisco. There is publicity in this week's Guardian. Seven prisoners with HIV and Hep C died recently at Corcoran and there has been no investigation. Ex-prisoners will speak out, as well as Charles, Kevin, Tuere, and others from CPF. PLEASE COME!

This is very interesting Christy, I am going to copy this and send it to Richard and see if he knows anything about it. Are you saying that their is a manual that Steve wrote and they won't let anyone send it in? Love Barbara
