Default What is California Prison Like - Prison Horror Stories

Calif. Prison Series. What is Calif. Prison Like? Part 6
Horror stories.

OK gang, It has taken me awhile to build up to telling my stories that I have never told anyone before. Some I have hinted at, or referred to in other post, but until now, I have never told the whole story to anyone. No, I'm not snitching as the names of the guilty are changed to protect my ass. I'm hoping there will be a catharsis in telling these, & I can finally slay these dragons & lay these demons to rest.

Some of you may have gotten from my previous post that prison life isn't all that bad. I may be guilty of down playing the horror, & violence of prison life, but as rare as violence is, when it happens it rocks your whole world. It brands the images, & sounds into your psyche to be replayed on dark lonely nights when your only reaction is to wake up in a cold sweat, trembling as if you were there all over again.

From Vietnam to Northern Ireland, to running drugs across the Mexican Border, none have had the lasting effect on me as my time in prison. PTSS (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome), possibly, Life, definitely!

Orange County Jail.
Thunder Dome

My very first experience to violence locked up happened in county jail, as it is with most guys. You have guys locked up for traffic tickets with guys looking at Life sentences.

I was in one of the large 68 man tanks. As always we had our selection of kids. Dope fiends, speed freaks, what ever is the slang of the day. A group of 5-6 scandalous little creeps, who weren’t about nothing. Little jail house thieves. As dumb as they were, they were smart enough not to screw with anyone who would fight back. One day we get this old man (In his 60's) rolling in on a DUI working on number 4 or 5 or 6 or whatever. The guy had money, or at least people taking care of him, because at canteen he got a big bag, & made no secret of all he got. Not wanting to be leached to death, he decided to not kick any body down. He wasn't going to share nothing with anyone. That’s fine with me, I had my stuff. This however didn't sit well with our little gang. So they tried to pressure him to get some of his stuff. That not working, they decided to just out right take his stuff. The guy didn't stand a chance against a bunch of 20 something kids. He started to scream, when one guy clocked him good. Knocked the guy out. He hit the ground, doing the fish. The other guys freaked, & they all proceeded to beat, & kick this guy into a bloody mess. We all sat there in shock as we watched these guys beat this old man nearly to death.

Again at the jail, this one includes yours truly. This was during my first bullet in the county. A bullet is a year sentence. In county you get guys coming & going daily, so you hear all kinds of stories. At any rate, this guy comes in right before we go to dinner. He's a white guy, so I'm giving him the low down as to what the rules of the cellblock are. Chow time, & off we go. So, we have our trays, & are eating, when this guy starts to tell us what he got busted for & how. This is unbelievable, as I can’t believe what I'm hearing. He is telling us, that they got him for rape. He would go through an apt. complex dressed in a uniform with a little spray bottle knocking on doors. When a woman answered, he would tell her he was supposed to spray for roaches. If she balked, he would say, no problem you want bugs, it's cool, because I'm not coming back. He laughed as he said "you’d be surprised how many of these dumb B***hes would let me in". Once inside he would then attack & rape them. I could hardly eat; as I'm blown away this guy is just telling us guys at the table all this as if we were talking baseball. He got caught because in the process of raping this girl her old man came home, & he dove out the window half naked, but he was on the second story, & when he landed he sprained his ankle, & knocked the wind out of himself. The other guys at the table, we all kept looking at each other in disbelief, as this fool went on & on. We played along, laughed at his jokes, made him feel right at home. Once back at the cellblock, I told him of the rule that all new guys had to shower before the night was over. I went to the shot caller, with the other guys from the table, & ran the story down to him. He gave us the green light to take care of it. So, when the fool, went to take his shower, a few of us decided it was the time for us to take ours too. Showers are great to take guys out in, because you can wash off the blood, your naked, so your close don't get blood on them either, & it's hard to see what’s happening in the showers because of a thick opaque shower curtain. We all dropped bars of soap in socks, & once in the shower, we beat this fool unconscious. He didn't even get one swing in, so none of us had a mark. No one saw anything. Guards didn't investigate too hard either. I do know this guy has a scar on his face that will be there for the rest of his life, because I put it there. He will probably never have kids either as one of the other guys really concentrated on the fools groin area, with his feet, kicking, & stomping. I just wish the girls this guy violated, knew what had happened to him. Hopefully, the DA got the message to them, as I have no doubt this guy missed a few court dates, & with his new scar, I'm sure some wondered what happened.

Wasco State Prison
Reception Center
"D" Yard, Lifer yard.
This is where you wait while CDC looks into you pass, & tries to determine where you’re going to do your time. Your locked down for over 23 hrs a day, 6 days a week, & 24hrs 1 day a week. 2 man cells. Boring, & pretty quite, as the shooter doesn't like a lot of noise. We keep it quite; he lets us fish (Pass things between cells using lines). Then all of a sudden all hell breaks lose. At first you cant tell where it is coming from. You rush to the small window in the door trying to get a glimpse of what the hell is going down. One guy is screaming bloody murder. I have heard this kind of scream before. Someone is being subjected to a horrendous amount of physical pain. It is a blood-curdling scream that permeates your whole being. Then you hear another voice pleading for help, "Open the door, open the door, open the door", then you can see the flickering of flames, & you can smell something burning, & it stinks. A combination of burning hair, & plastic, & burnt food. The shooter who has the door controls, not knowing what is happening isn't about to open any doors. The screaming is intense & not subsiding. Finally a CO goes over to the cell where all the commotion is going on, & tells the guy inside to move to the back of the cell, but the guy doesn't want to because he'll get burnt. This yelling back & forth seems to go on forever, but probably only last a few seconds. The CO, finally tells the shooter to open the door, & one guy gomes stumbling out, & is immediately met by the CO's baton on the back of his head. He hits the ground. The CO gaffles him up & drags him away from the cell. The screaming from the cell has turned into loud moans, & gasp, & weird sounds. It takes about five minutes before any medical help arrives. They then take this poor fool out on a stretcher, & he is burned over his whole body. It seems that he got validated as an AB associate, & was waiting for a transfer to Pelican Bay for an indeterminate SHU term. The guy couldn't handle it, so he wrapped himself up in sheets, & toilet paper, & set himself on fire. I have no idea whether he lived or died, but I'm sure if he lived, he wished he hadn't.

Old Folsom
I've been here about a month now, & things are going smooth. I'm taking an early shower when this guy comes in who is new, because I don’t remember seeing him around. Guys have tattoos & many you can read like a book. Many of mine are like that. I notice he has a tattoo around his collarbone. I have one too, that reads "Ladies Love Outlaws", well this guys reads "Kid Like Candy". So I say to this clown, "That’s one f***ed up tattoo". I asked him why the f**k would he put that on his body. He says "Cause it's true", & then proceeds to tell me, "If You Don’t like it, cut it off". OOOHHHH a tough guy. So, I go to the shot caller, tell him what went down, & I get a green light. Prison shanks come in two varieties, flats & rods. I like rods, as they are easy to use. Going to chow we pass this blind spot where the CO's can't see what’s going on. So, on our way to chow, I position myself behind this guy, & as we get to the blind spot, I step into him, & stab him about 5-6 times. He grabs his side, & stumbles out onto the yard. I drop the rod, & we all go out onto the yard. The alarm sounds, & we all hit the ground. We go on lock down & he goes to the hospital. In their investigation ISU (Institutional Security Unit), gets a few anonymous Kits telling them I did it, but no witnesses, & the guy refuses to name me as his attacker. They don't have a street case, but they do have enough to give me a 6-month SHU term. While in the SHU, the CO's give me extra coffee, & large portions of chow, & little perks like that. I spent 4 of the six months by myself, which I ask for.

I am not being evil or cruel in saying that every single victim or,parent of a victim, of one of these men you have described wished they too could do harm and punish them for what they have taken, that which is irreplacable, unfair, and unwarranted. But, for many of us, the only thing we truly believe in , is Karmic law, the only FAIR law there is. You write so well, and eloquently, It's like a well written book you cant put down. Many of us can't imagine having to live like our loved ones do, as you did,as many will continue to live. Thank you for your honesty.

Sorry, but my post was cut off by accident so to continue my Corcoran SHU post

I have heard some horrible sounds that men can make when they are in pain, & agony. One of the worst I have ever heard was at the Corcoran SHU late one night. It started with pleading, "No!!, No!!, " & sssome scuffling around, then more pleading, & then the scream. The scream of a man being raped, of a man losing his manhood in the most horrible way imaginable. Then the groaning, the moaning, the crying, the fit of rage, & anger. The sound of fist hitting flesh. This is something no one should ever have to hear, & something no one should ever have to go through, but it happens, & to have witnesses to your embarrassment, must be humiliating, except to this day, I have no idea who this happened to, & for that I thank God.

These are just some of the stories. I could go on & on, but it would just be redundant, & only serve the purpose of titillating the perverse.

Thanks again for this Ken !!! It's well written as ever, and so interesting to read, even though it's scary !!

Gosh, I guess this guy was completely desperate to set himself on fire !!! It's such a horrible and painful way to die, and as you stated, it's probably worse when you don't die !!

I find it amazing that the cops are giving you "green lights" to beat up or stab guys. I mean I won't comment whether it's justified or not, but I would think the COs shouldn't take someone's side against another. IMO, they should be here for the security of ANY prisoner.

I also find amazing the length of time they need to react to a situation. Like opening the doors of a cell which is on fire !!! The consequences for being that slow could be dramatic !!

Once again thanks for these stories Ken

All the best
Phil

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain so many things to the outside folks. These are the kind of things that our loved ones don't tell us to much about. We all know that these things happen but we tend to close our eyes to them. Love Barbara

Thanks for sharing. It is scary to hear these things but I think we all need to know what goes on in prison.

Thanks for sharing, Ken

Phil, I don't get green lights from the CO's or cops. I get them from the white shot caller. This is a prisoner who is the leader of the white guys on a yard. Before you take someone out, or get in a fight, you need permission before you do this. The guy you plan on attacking may owe a lot of money for drugs, or sex, or gambling, & if your responsible for taking him off the yard, you could be held responsible for his debts. Alsso you may not be the only one who is after the guy, & ssomeone else maay have more of a reasson to take him out. There are many reasssons why you need to get permission before you do something that may effect other prisoners. At 11pm every night, they throw what is called the dead man switch which locks all the cells. The doors can't be opened, unles a Sgt comes down & unlocks them. It can take 15-30 min sometimes to locate a Sgt. to unlock the doors. That is why so many things happen after the last lockdown. They know it will be awhile before aanyone is going to come & open the cell door. This is when most rapes occure.

For the rest, thank you so much for your kind words. I really didn't think there was this big of a demand to know all this stuff. I'm just so very glad thaat some are finding it helpful, & interesting.

Oooppsss sorry Ken, I had to re read this, and yes you're right, you never mentioned cops or COs, I misunderstood what you wrote. And thank you for explaining this "shot caller" and all these rules on the yard.

You say most rapes occur after the last lock down, which implies that the rapist might be your own roomy ?? Gosh !!!

Thanks again Ken

Ken, that is so weird that a man would have a tattoo saying "kid like candy" as what could it refer to other than sexually abusing children? You'd think the man would be scared to have other prisoners see the tattoo as I'm sure we've ALL heard stories about what happens to "baby rapers" in prison. Thanks for your stories Ken.

Ken,
Your posts are great! They are informative to the mystries of my unknown. My loved one is on a minimum security yard, and not to make it sound any easier, but there have been some ugly things happen in the dorm as well as in the visiting room. I personally had to allow the police to go through my house and tear it up as I sat there for 2 hours watching. One day when I was sitting in the visiting room the "goon squad" comes in from everywhere. It was very scary! Thank you for all of your information, I hope I don't sound silly and people think that I am building anything up, but the "goon squad" is NO joke! Thanks again! KJsTT
