Unhappy What and Where is SAFP

My best friend just got sentenced to SAFP and is awaiting for a bed to open in Conroe county jail. He asked me to get some information on it. We want to know kind of what to expect and if at all possible the location of it. Or maybe if there are several locations the possibility of him getting one closer to home. Any info at all about SAFP would be helpful. Thanks

Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facility
SAFPF - a secure residential program which provides substance abuse treatment and counseling to non-violent felony offenders whose substance abuse problem contributed signifcantly to their committing a crime. Upon completion of the program, the offenders are returned to supervision. - TDCJ Offender Supervision Guidebook

From what I know, this is a program that is roughly six to nine months, and upon completion of the program, the offender stays in a halfway house, or rehab, and that is typically 90 days minimum. Essentially...You spend a year in Prison...then get out and have strict aftercare requirements. Not to mention usually ten years of strict supervision, probation, not Parole. The time spent in SAFPF does not count should the probation be revocated. I hear the program works, but if the person is not serious about getting sober, then its not a good idea. IMO.

The only SAFPF that had beds while I was waiting for chain, was in Winnsboro at some private unit. The wait time for SAFPF is about 6 to 9 months, thats to get a bed...Again, that was about a year ago...I dont know what it is now, and all of the information I got was from inmates who may be jaded. Some said it was a great program, but they were in jail just like me so I wondered? Statistically, those that are serious about the program, and actually complete it, they have like a perfect success rate on supervision. Again...Thats only what I hear...its not a fact...Best of Luck

My son is at the Glossbrenner Unit in San Diego, TX. He had to wait four months to be transferred. I will be seeing him for the first time this Saturday. After I see him I can let you know more about the program. The only thing he said in a letter was that it was more a behavior modification program.
